Sleep with him?“Uh, excuse me, but I’m not sleeping with anyone,” I interjected.

“And don’t touch her,” Locke added as if he thought this would appease me.

I glowered at Locke, then turned to the golden-eyed male, who was standing so rigid my muscles ached just from looking at him. Throwing my hands in the air at the lot of them, I stormed into Kade’s room.Fucking monsters.

CHAPTER 19

~ Raine ~

Kadefollowedmeintohis bedroom, and I tried not to think about his hulking figure at my back.

Halfway across the room, I stopped before the massive bed. A new woolen blanket rested on top, as if someone had changed the linen since I’d last been in there. The idea of crawling beneath the blanket onto the wolf monster’s ultrasoft bed seemed heavenly, but if I had my way, I wouldn’t be sleeping at all.

“This is ridiculous,” I said, turning to him. “I can find somewhere to sleep in the main room.”

Kade’s look was deadpan, as if he was as pleased about this as I was and I was wasting his time. “Bed,” he said in that growly voice of his.

I narrowed my eyes. “And where will you sleep?”

In response to my question, he reached back to grab his shirt with one hand and pulled it over his head, revealing a torso of hard, perfect abs that rippled as he moved. Striding to the left side of the bed, he lifted the blanket and jumped onto the mattress. Draping the blanket back over himself, he folded his thick arms behind his head and closed his eyes.

I gaped.Unbelievable.Shifting uncomfortably, I weighed my options. There was plenty of room on the other side of the bed. Enough that even with me sleeping near the edge, there would still be four feet between us. I thought of crawling on the mattress to sleep next Kade—the same wolf monster who had almost killed me not long ago.

I should have hated him, and I did, but…he’d also saved me. Even if he’d thought we were bonded and his life was linked to mine, he’d made the choice not to let me bleed to death. And even now, it was as if something was pulling me toward him. Telling me to move closer to him.

I glanced to where the blanket wasn’t high enough to cover his broad chest. Would he stay on his side of the bed? I remembered the searing pain as his wolf fangs had buried into my thigh, and then the image of his naked human body appeared in my mind. The male was raw masculinity, rough and untamed, and my body reacted to the thought of his on mine.

Warmth pooled in my core, and I swallowed.Sleeping with the enemy will not help you find Cara, I chastised myself, squashing the thought of his huge…Fuck, Raine. Pull it together.

Kade’s nostrils flared as if he was scenting the air, and my heart rate quickened. Did the monster know what I was thinking?

Oh, hell no.In a few strides, I was at the side of the bed. I yanked the huge blanket off in one swift movement and snatched up the closest pillow. Kade watched me with one eye cracked, but he said nothing as I exposed him to the cool air.

Throwing the blanket to the floor, I folded it over so I could crawl between it and rested my head on the pillow. It wasn’t exactly comfortable, especially not in the tight leather outfit, and I momentarily wished I was back wearing Kade’s shirt, but there was no way I was stripping, and I’d slept on worse.

I grinned, somehow feeling triumphant, but then my face sobered as I realized I was proud of myself for not jumping into bed with a monster. What an achievement.I sighed. I was in trouble.

Itwasalongtime before the bastard fell asleep. I lay on the floor motionless until the steady rhythm of Kade’s breathing filled the room, the only sound in the otherwise silent space. No sounds came from the common room either. I continued to wait for what felt like another hour, and then I slid from the blanket cocoon I’d made.

The only light came from a lone blue torch burning near the door, and I padded slowly around in the dark until I came to the desk that rested against the wall opposite the door.

The polished wood surface was bare except for an ink pen, a blank piece of paper, and a letter opener. Grabbing the letter opener, I tested the pointed tip against my finger. It was blunted, of course, but it could still work as a weapon if I pressed hard enough.

My fingers trailed to one of the two drawers underneath the right side of the desk. I bit my lip and cringed at the low scraping sound as I opened the first drawer, turning to watch Kade. The monster’s broad chest continued to rise and fall steadily, and I let out the breath I’d been holding.Thank the Goddess.

My deft fingers searched through the contents of the drawer—blank paper, a bottle of ink, and a stick of wax. Frowning, I closed the drawer and opened the second drawer just as carefully as I had the first. A bunch of reports were neatly stacked, and I picked through them eagerly. Since I’d come to this place, this was the first time I’d found something that might actually give me information.

Lifting the stack of paper from the drawer, I rested it on the table and scanned the first page. I swallowed as I stared at the picture of a dead human that was pasted to the left of the page. No, not dead. Bri.Bri’s chestnut-colored hair lay lifeless around her head, but I knew it was her. The girl from the lineup with me. If Locke and the others were telling the truth, then in this picture she was likely unconscious, not dead. This report had to be from the past few nights.

Bri was sprawled on a cot, similar to the one I’d slept on when I’d first come to this place, and she was dressed in her dirty white garment.

I turned my attention to the rest of the page and began reading. It didn’t take me long to realize what I was looking at.Day 1: The human subject is already showing signs of the change. From analyzing her blood sample, it can be concluded the curse will take her in the next 24 hours.

Subconsciously, I rubbed the inside of my right arm.So that’s why Locke asked for the vials of blood from Lyr.The thought that someone had been coming to collect my blood all this time made me shiver.

I scanned the rest of the page. There were details on Bri’s reactions in the first two trials. She’d changed during the second trial with the rocks falling from the ceiling. Another picture was at the bottom of the page, and in this one, Bri was staring straight forward, green horns protruding from her chestnut-colored hair and green eyes staring back at me.She’s a demon.

Kade shifted on the bed behind me, and I quickly glanced his way. When the male didn’t stir, I began rifling through the other pages. They were all there. The other villagers.
