Looking up, I turned my attention to the males. Kade’s gaze connected with mine, and all I saw was sadness.

“You fucking bitch!” yelled a male with long brown hair that reached his shoulders. Fury raged in his green eyes. “I don’t care if you’re a newblood. I’ll kill you for what you’ve done.” Throwing his blade to the ground, he reached up to fist his shirt, tearing it from his body, and the other male beside him did the same.

“The Taratun will have our heads if you kill her!” Zacal shouted at his followers, but they weren’t listening to their alpha.

Holy fucking shit.I watched in horror as their bodies shifted and re-formed until there were two wolves before me, snarling and snapping their jaws, saliva dripping onto the ground.

“RAINE!” Kade roared, lunging toward one of the wolves as the monsters shot forward at the same time. Kade’s thick arms grabbed the closest wolf, wrapping around the silver wolf’s furry neck in a vise grip as they both fell to the ground.

There was no point in running. I turned toward the black wolf who was barreling toward me. The wolf’s sleek body jumped into the air, and I rolled to the side to avoid his gnashing jaws. Claws scratched against stone as the wolf skidded to a halt and rounded back toward me.

Springing to my feet, I took a step backward, only to find myself falling as my boot slipped on Kasey’s blood. Pain ricocheted up my spine as my ass connected with the floor. I shuffled backward, my palms scratching against the ground.

The wolf lunged for me, a huge mass of sinewy muscle covered in black fur, and violence shone in his green eyes as he sought his revenge from me. Blood pounded in my ears. There was nothing around me I could use to save myself. The sword was too far out of my reach, and the wall of weapons was still too far away.I’m going to die,I thought as my body grew cold.

I wouldn’t even get a chance to find Cara. To save her. I was a fool coming into this fight. I was a human in a world of monsters. I didn’t have claws or fangs. But I couldn’t bring myself to regret it. I’d fought. And that was all I’d tried to do since Cara had been taken. To find a way to make a difference rather than be a lamb that awaited the slaughter.

I’dtried. The wolf leaped into the air, jaws wide as he sailed toward me, and I braced for the impact. Braced for the pain as those fangs tore me to shreds.

The wolf’s sharp claws reached toward me, each curved nail bringing the promise of death. His gaping mouth was inches from me, his breath hot and rancid on my face, when a massive brown wolf came from the side, smashing into him and sending him sprawling to the ground, away from me.

My fingers trembled as I blinked in surprise, still expecting the pain that didn’t come. The huge brown wolf stood atop the black wolf, pinning the smaller wolf to the ground. The black wolf snarled from beneath the bigger wolf’s paws, and the brown wolf let out a growl that shook the walls of the cavern and made my bones rattle.

The black wolf stopped struggling and went limp as he remained trapped under the stronger male. The brown wolf bent his head, puffing his breath onto the smaller wolf, and the black wolf seemed to shrink back, submitting to the stronger wolf.

Satisfied that the black wolf wasn’t going to move, the brown wolf turned his golden gaze my way.Kade.I should have been shaken to my core at the sight of the wolf, but all I felt was relief. Fucking relief.

A clang sounded on the other side of the room, and the brown wolf’s huge head turned to the noise. Zacal had knocked one of the axes as he moved along the shelf of weapons, backing toward the door. He froze as Kade’s gaze bored into him.

The brown wolf growled in the face of the black wolf one more time before stalking toward where Zacal still remained in human form. Zacal’s face was pale white, and even from here, I could see the rapid rise and fall of his chest as he stared at Kade’s wolf.

The brown wolf prowled closer to him until he was only a couple yards from the male. Lifting his head, the wolf let out another growl that shook the walls, and Zacal cringed, his shoulders dipping down, his chest caving inward.

I stood and walked over to the sword that I’d used to stab Kasey. The black wolf’s gaze watched me the entire time, but he remained where he was on the floor.

When I looked toward the brown wolf again, Kade was standing in his place, his wide shoulders squared, golden eyes blazing, and his head high.

“Take your wolves, Zacal, and get out of here before I decide to kill you,” Kade growled, and even my pulse raced at his words. Gone was the male who was defeated, buried under his guilt. Here was a leader. An alpha.

Zacal lifted himself now that Kade was in human form, but he still pressed against the wall. “I’m the wolf alpha of the House of Worzen. You won’t kill me. We both know you don’t want to take my place. You’re a traitor who left the wolves in your care to die. No one would follow you.”

Kade paused, and I had no doubt the words still stung him. “Leave,” he snarled again. “Tell no one of the newblood and what happened here. We both know if anyone hears of this, your time as alpha of the pack will come to a swift end.” He peered over at the black wolf lying in submission on the floor. “How long do you think it will be until he starts questioning your leadership now that he’s seen how weak you are?”

Zacal didn’t answer, his lips forming a tight line.

Kade looked back again to the silver wolf, who lay unconscious on the floor, and the gray wolf, who still had blood leaking from her. “Get Kasey to a healer,” he commanded, then he turned and strode toward me.

The muscles on Kade’s naked body rippled with every step he took, and I forced myself to focus on his golden eyes. Gone were the shadows, and brightness sparked in the golden depths instead.

“Let’s go,” he said as he reached me and led me toward the door. Zacal’s and the other male’s eyes followed me as we strode from the room, but I didn’t look at them. I was too preoccupied thinking about the male at my side.

CHAPTER 21

~ Raine ~

Kadeonlymadeita few steps outside the door to the training cavern when he stumbled. I moved closer to him, draping one of his thick arms over my shoulders. The muscles of his arm tensed when I grabbed him, but he leaned onto me.

“You weigh a ton,” I groused, lifting his arm higher when it started to slide off my shoulders, his skin slippery from all the blood. His head lowered, as if it was taking all his effort not to collapse, but a light still shone in his eyes, his golden gaze brighter than I’d ever seen it.
