My thoughts slide back to Cassia once more and again I feel it in my damn bones how she makes my life complete by who she is. Staying away from her isn’t an option when I need her. But even before Elvira came back we were thrown together each and every time. It feels as if our lives always cross ever since I became the sheriff of this town.

I shut down the computer and lock everything away ‘cause it’s the end of my shift. I was heading home but Cassia decided I was to stay at her cabin at the club’s ranch. No damn way am I going to refuse. Besides, with the turn of events it’s clear something bad is brewing with Elvira and at home is not where I want to be alone with my son without any form of backup.

I get inside my patrol car and make a quick pitstop at my house to pack a bag for me and Kai before heading toward their ranch. They have the same concept in place my old MC used to have. Sometimes it’s hard to think about what I’m missing out on; not being able to ride my bike and spending time with my brothers. Even with Kai I had a good nanny when I needed one or my club brothers would chip in to watch over him.

Out here I have my parents who live one town over and were thrilled I moved back home. They’re always ready to chip in when it comes to Kai but I’d rather have them keeping their distance right now.

Cassia’s MC has repeatedly felt their own heat of danger and have dealt with it with their fists raised, ready to take on their opponent. Atticus has been there every step of the way and since I am the law around here and they want their chance to repay my former Prez, I’d take this opportunity with both hands. Besides, with my thoughts and needs on one line? If I play my cards right and get my way, I will be a part of this MC very soon.

Having Cassia as my old lady, becoming her old man. Fuck. Leaving my former MC only to land in a town where I find a woman who can fill the gaps that prevent my life from becoming whole again. Fucking perfect.

I park my patrol car next to a row of bikes, making a mental note to buy myself a new bike as soon as things settle down, and notice a Shire horse with a woman guiding it around the pasture.

The little man riding the massive horse is my son and the grin on his face lightens my heart. Strolling over to the fence, I place my boot on it and lean on my forearms while I put my Stetson on my head to block out the late evening sun.

“Kai was feeling better as the day progressed and wanted to ride Melody. Cassia kept telling him he needed to get his strength back first. The kid ate the fruit she gave him and another sandwich. No puking and his stomach feels better, or so he says. Anyway, four rounds around the pasture, that’s what she promised him,” Hudsyn says from my left.

I keep my gaze on my son. “The smile on his face is worth more than a million bucks.”

“I’d say he loves horses just as much as bikes. You should have heard him talk to the men about the Harley you owned when you were still riding.”

“I just decided to buy me a new one,” I admit.

She doesn’t reply but instead taps my forearm, causing our gaze to collide.

“What are your intentions with Cassia?” Her posture screams defensive but her eyes are daring me to spill my guts.

“Truth?” I quip.

“No, I asked you to lie to my face so I can shoot your head off and bury you underneath the manure pile.” She rolls her eyes. “Come on, Sheriff. You have a son, moved here to raise him the way you were raised, and gave up your club. Atticus told me the truth when you replaced the sheriff. Yet, I see the longing in your eyes every time you visit. You miss it. Your brothers, the ranch, the wind in your hair when you’re on your bike. Not to mention, the way you and Cassia interact is like striking flint against steel, causing a fire to ignite. Others might see it as going head-to-head at every turn but I don’t have to run around to know what’s happening right in front of me. You don’t strike me as stupid either. Hard-headed? Yeah. But you know damn well what I’m talking about.”

I hold her gaze and tell her the truth, “If I was still wearing a cut, I’d claim her on the spot.”

Her grin is earsplitting. “Cassia might be hurt by what you unrightfully told her to scare her off, but she’ll get over it if you keep pushing. If you’re all in? I’m guessing you’ll be wearing a leather cut again in no-time at all. Different patches, though. But we’d be thrilled to have you.”

I tip my chin and mutter, “Thanks, Prez.”

“Admit it, you like calling me that.” Hudsyn grins.

I chuckle and shake my head. I hear my son call which allows for my gaze to stray to Cassia who is guiding her horse our way.

“Hey, Captain,” I quip. “Feeling better?”

He leans forward and lets his tiny fingers tangle in Melody’s thick mane and sighs happily. “Lots.”

“Come on,” Cassia quips. “Let’s keep you feeling better and put Melody back into the pasture.”

“I can ride her again tomorrow?” Kai greedily asks.

“Let’s see how you get through the night first because if you’re feeling better, it will be a normal school day for you.” The second those words are out of my mouth I regret them because the situation has changed.

I glance at Hudsyn and ask, “Mind if I have a chat with Cassia for a moment?”

“I’ll do you one better,” Hudsyn says and grabs the fence to easily jump over it and takes the reins from Cassia. “Why don’t you two chat while Kai and I put Melody into the pasture and head inside the clubhouse? You can come find us when you’re done. What do you say, Kai? One more round and then we’ll go, okay?”

“Yayyyy,” Kai cheers and waves goodbye.

“He really loves that horse,” I mutter and keep staring at him.
