“You don’t have to,” Jenna said. “I know Drew didn’t live like a monk before we got together. His love life would be hard not to notice even if you wanted to ignore it.”

“Well, thank goodness you’re aware of that. But I... I just wanted you to be forewarned of, ah...” Her voice trailed off. She looked pained.

“I assume you’re referring to the pictures in the tabloids lately?”

Bev’s lips tightened. “I’m glad you know about them. I would hate to be the one to tell you.”

“It’s not what it seems,” Jenna explained. “Drew got ambushed by the photographer and the girls when he got to that party. The whole thing was staged.”

“Oh.” Bev’s lips were still compressed. “Is that a fact?”

“It is,” Jenna insisted. “Really. Someone is trying to take him down.”

“You truly believe that?”

“One hundred percent,” Jenna said firmly. “Not a doubt in my mind.”

Bev let out a sharp little sigh. “Well, then. If you’re sure, then I suppose there’s nothing left to say, honey. Except sorry, for overstepping my bounds.”

“I know it came from a good place,” Jenna said. “You’re very kind. Trying to protect me when you barely even know me.”

“That’s a generous way for you to look at it, my dear,” Bev said. “My husband and I were worried the second he introduced you as his fiancée. We just hate to see a lovely young woman with all that energy and promise running right off a cliff.”

“No cliffs, I promise,” she assured the other woman. “My heart is safe.”

“Good luck with that, honey.” Bev patted her shoulder with a smile. “But it’s not supposed to be safe, you know. That’s not what hearts are for.”
