Eighteen

The meeting about engineering problems in the Abu Dhabi project ran an extra hour over, but Drew was in too good a mood to be upset. Maybe he wasn’t going to have to resign from his position after all. Which was a huge relief. Fingers crossed. For all of it, including Jenna.

He was on cloud nine after that night with her. He never allowed himself to look at his phone in meetings, but he could feel the phone vibrate in his pocket whenever she sent him a message. The constant buzz of anticipation kept his spirits sky-high, even with Harold giving him the fish-eye.

Eventually he was going to have to do something about his cousin’s poisonous hostility, but today he couldn’t be bothered to worry about it. He had better things to think about. Like Jenna’s texts.

He usually felt annoyed and oppressed when his lovers texted him during a workday. He liked keeping things compartmentalized. Work was work, and he liked a hard focus.

Not an option with Jenna. She was interconnected with every thought in his head.

As they came out of the meeting, he already had his phone in his hand but was still talking to his VPs, including Harold. “Make sure you talk to Michaela and Loris about those budget details before you move forward,” Drew said.

“Of course,” his cousin drawled. “Look at you. In such a good mood today.”

Drew gave him a wary look. “Why shouldn’t I be?”

“I just expected you to look more hungover, considering the condition you were in last night,” Harold said.

“I didn’t drink last night,” he said.

Harold snorted. “If you say so. Must be the health benefits of rolling around in bed with Jenna Somers. Guess I can’t really blame you. She is red-hot.”

Drew waited for a couple of breaths before he replied. “Don’t say her name again,” he said. “Don’t even get near her. Or we will have a problem.”

“Oh, yeah? You going to go all tough ex-Marine on me and rearrange my face?”

“If that’s the only thing you understand,” Drew replied. “Bring it.”

“Break it up, boys.” Ava’s crisp voice came from behind them. “Harry, whatever your damn problem is, put it on ice and excuse us, please. I urgently need to speak to Drew. Alone.”

Harold made a disgusted sound and stalked away.

Drew turned toward his sister. “Thanks for shutting him up. Uncle Malcolm wouldn’t appreciate me breaking his jaw during working hours.”

“Don’t thank me yet,” Ava said icily. “You’re not going to be grateful when I’m done with you.”

Tension gripped him. “Why? What have I done now?”

“Let’s talk in your office, please.”

Drew knew what this was about. He strode toward his office, Ava keeping pace beside him, and held the door for her. When the door closed behind them, he braced himself and turned. “Okay. Let me have it.”

“What in holy hell do you think you’re doing?” Ava burst out.

He sighed. “Help me out here, Av. Context, please.”

“Don’t you dare play dumb!” Ava said furiously. “I never meant for you to seduce her! That is self-indulgent and irresponsible!”

Drew let out a harsh laugh. “You threw her into my arms yourself.”

“Is that what you think I did? That I just gave you license to amuse yourself?”

“Amuse myself?” Drew bristled. “What the hell, Av? She’s a grown woman!”

“She’s not like your usual type. You know. All the Lydia clones.”

“Lydia is not my type,” he snarled.
