She pushed through the double doors into the dimmed ballroom. All lights were trained on the dais where the master of ceremonies stood, about to award the Wexler Prize.

Vann stepped out of the shadows, looking alarmed. “Jenna? What’s going on? They’re announcing the prize! Get over there with your team, quick!”

Jenna grabbed his arm. “Vann, I need your help. Can you run an audio recording that’s on my phone onto the sound system of this room, right now? It’s for Drew. To save his bacon. Please, please, please help me. Time is of the essence.”

Vann’s eyes widened. “Yes,” he said swiftly. “Of course. Where is it?”

She pulled up the file and handed him her phone. “Listen for my cue,” she said. “It was recorded in a bathroom stall, so crank up the volume to the max.”

“...and this year’s Wexler Prize for Excellence in Biomedical Engineering is awarded to...the Arm’s Reach Foundation!”

The room erupted in thunderous applause.

“Go!” Vann whispered into her ear. “I got this.”

Her team, gathered at the table that had been assigned to them, had risen to their feet and were scanning the room for her with desperate eyes.

She waved at them and hurried up to the front of the room, hoping her hair wasn’t too wild. She’d just throw her shoulders back, tilt up her chin, and act like she’d meant it all along. It was the only way to go.

Applause swelled as she climbed up onto the stage and joined her team. The master of ceremonies went on with his spiel. “We’ve just in the past few months had the immense pleasure of learning about the work of Jenna Somers and her amazing team at Arm’s Reach. Now let’s watch a video tribute to their passion and dedication that the talented Ava Maddox has prepared for us! Ladies and gentlemen...enjoy!”

The lights went down, the screen lit up and the video began to play.
