“He swears?” I blurted out involuntarily.

“They’re just words, koukla mou,” Vander teased.

“Let me see her, Dad,” George demanded.

Vander shifted the phone, and I came face-to-face with my nightmare. He assessed me quietly while I did the same. Vander’s eyes, Vander’s lips, Vander’s dark curly hair, Vander’s olive skin, Vander’s narrow face, pointed chin, strong brow, looking at George I could hardly believe I didn’t know Jace was Vander’s.

Finally, I broke the silence between us. “Hello, Georgie. You look just like your dad.”

He smiled and my stomach dipped. A few years from now, he’d be the spitting image of the Vander I first fell in love with.

“Hi, Ruby. It’s fucking awesome to meet you,” he twinkled, and I threw up my hands. Both he and Vander laughed.

“Oh. My. God. There’s two of you now to torture me!”

“You don’t ever swear, Ruby?” George asked.

“I only ever say one, and it’s rare,” I stated primly.

Vander laughed beneath me. “Tell him what it is.”

I glared at Vander then turned back to George. “Shitfuckdamn.”

George laughed, and I realized all my fear was for naught. This was Vander’s child. I looked at him and saw only the man I loved. That might change once I met his ex-wife, but for now, I felt okay.

“Well, if you’re only going to swear once in a while, better make it a good one.”

“Exactly,” I agreed, smiling.

After the initial joking, George got a bit more serious and asked us questions about the plans for Thanksgiving.

We decided to take the boys away to Blue Mountain for a couple of nights and come back in time to eat Thanksgiving dinner with Yiayia, Amber, Gus, and Alex. Vander relayed the plan to George.

I drifted away from the conversation for a bit, lost in my own thoughts, when I heard ‘mountain biking’.

“What?” I asked Vander.

“We’re going to rent mountain bikes and do the mountain trails.”

I couldn’t remember the last time I got on a bike. I didn’t have one as a kid, and I wasn’t sure I even knew how to ride one. Certainly, I wouldn’t be able to ride one down a mountain.

“When you say ‘we’, you mean…”

Vander grinned. “George, Jace, and me. You can stay at the lodge and read your kissy books-”

“Vander! Shame on you!” I swung around to George. “Don’t listen to him!”

“I won’t, don’t worry, Ruby.”

Shortly after getting off the call, and feeling much lighter, Vander shuffled me into the bedroom.

I pulled his t-shirt out of his jeans, and he yanked it off over his head, dropping it to the floor. I ran my fingers lightly over his abs, remembered how he said all he did for years was work and work out.

I wanted to lick him.

Run my tongue over those ridges.

Follow them down, trace those veins with my teeth, take him in my mouth.
