She looked at me drily. “I just told you, something borrowed and something blue,” she deadpanned.

I chortled, she snickered, and we bumped shoulders.

She extended one delicate finger and touched the square box. “Open this one first.”

I pulled the tail of the ribbon and it fell away from the box. I lifted the lid to reveal a pile of pale blue lace. The first piece was a delicate lacey bra.

“Oh, Amber, it’s lovely!”

Underneath the bra I found a lacy triangle attached to a few strings. “Well, at least I won’t have panty lines,” I said drily.

Not that my dress would show panty lines. Never having been one for dresses, no one was more surprised than me at my choice. The top boasted a lace overlay over the deep vee bodice and long, lacy, fitted sleeves. The skirt gathered gently at the waist under a thin waistband, then fell to the floor in soft, voluminous folds. And those folds, thankfully, hid pockets!

She snickered. “There’s one more thing.”

I lifted the tissue paper to find a delicate, matching garter.

“Amber, it’s so pretty! Not gaudy at all!”

She sighed, a small smile on her pretty face. “It is, isn’t it.”

I placed the delicate lingerie back in the box. “Vander’s going to love this,” I snickered.

“That’s the idea,” she wagged her eyebrows at me.

This was honeymoon calibre lingerie. Our real honeymoon was still in the planning stages, part of that planning included some intensive therapy that Vander periodically attended with me to prepare for air travel.

We still hadn’t decided if we were bringing the boys with us. If I had it my way, we would. I could not imagine being so far away from Jace. Even the thought of George traveling gave me palpitations.

The boys were sleeping over at Amber’s tonight, but with George only here for two weeks, we didn’t want to take more than one night. We were working up to a weekend away without Jace, probably to Blue Mountain, in just a few weeks.

I was glad we had tonight, and I knew Vander would love my something blue.

“Now, this one,” Amber said, handing me the smaller box. “Your something borrowed is from Minty, not me.”

I opened the lid to see the sparkle of diamonds solitaire earrings. “Oh, my goodness! These are beautiful!”

Amber sniffed. “Not only that, but they are her most prized possession. These were her mother’s.”

I felt the blood drain from my face. “Oh, no, Amber. I can’t wear these! You know how I lose things!”

Amber smiled softly. “She knew you’d say that. She told me to tell you the backs screw on and it’s impossible for them to accidentally fall out. She also gave me strict instructions to be the one to put them in your ears and screw on the backs so you would not have responsibility for them for even a second.”

I laughed. “She knows me pretty well!”

“She does. And you’re very important to her. Wear them, okay?”

I sniffed. “Okay. Put them in.”

Amber slid the posts through my holes and secured the backs. I looked in the mirror. “I already look like a million dollars.”

Amber and I did our make-up. She helped me tame my hair, then we carried our dresses downstairs to Yiayia. Minty’s soft knock came at the front door, and Amber rushed to let her in.

Together, the three of us, with Yiayia supervising, finished getting ready. While I chose the black velvet material, and the lavender for accent, Amber and Minty chose their own style of dress.

Minty wore a black, long-sleeved, V-neck, fitted sheath that fell straight to the floor. In the front, a thigh-high slit revealed the deep lavender lining with her every step. It was elegant, as she was.

Amber’s dress, also long sleeved, featured a crossover top creating a deep Vee in the front, leading to a cinched crossover waist that met in a twist in the front, leading to a draped split right down the middle, showcasing her legs as well as the purple lining. It boasted a seventies vibe which suited her perfectly.
