Amber and Gus accompanied us on our first walk as a married couple around the altar, signifying their willingness to walk beside us as we walked through life together, and then the priest delivered his blessing and presented us to our guests, inviting Yiayia and Vander’s parents to be the first to congratulate us.

We turned and smiled. So many faces, shiny with tears, beamed back at us.

Vander laughed out loud, turned me in his arms, and kissed me.

Stepping off the altar, all our men, weirdly, gathered in a little huddle. With their backs to us, they fiddled with their jackets. As one, they turned.

They each had one hand stuffed in their pants pocket, holding their jackets open. With the other hand, they jacked up their pant leg, showing me their deep lavender waistcoats, that I did not order, and matching socks.

I slapped my hands over my face and Amber snickered with laughter, holding onto her sides. Yiayia tsked beside me, and I opened my arm to bring her in close. Her shoulders shook with the laughter she tried to suppress. Her boys could do nothing wrong, not really.

They grinned at me, and I chortled. “How did you pull this off?”

George tilted his head in Minty’s direction. “It was my idea, but Minnie helped.”

I looked at Minty and noted a well of tears in her eyes. I knew she would be taking George under her wing as well.

“Don’t ruin your make-up,” I murmured softly with a smile.

She laughed, and touched an elegant finger to each eye, sweeping the moisture away.

Vander held his hand out to me, and I took it. He crooked his elbow for Yiayia and dipped to kiss his mother’s cheek.

Surrounded by those we loved most in this world, we stepped into the future.

The End
