I eyed the table full of produce. My fingers itched with the desire to overturn the whole damn thing. I paused. That would make a big mess. One I’d have to clean up.

It would be expensive, too, I thought as I paced. I couldn’t afford that.

I lifted a potato. I could afford one potato. I drew back my arm and heaved the potato at the heavy door. I jumped at the sound of the impact. It was much louder than I thought it would be, and infinitely more satisfying than I expected. I picked up another.

I heard running footsteps from the other side and Vander pushed through the doorway, his face alarmed, my name on his lips.

“Ruby!”

I stared at him in shock. I had momentarily forgotten he was out there. My anger quickly gave way to embarrassment.

“What happened?” He looked around the room, searching for the source of the loud bang. His eyes found the split potato lying at his feet. He looked up at me, his eyebrows arched in question.

“It fell,” I explained, waving my free hand in a gesture that clearly said these things happen sometimes.

“It fell?” His face began to crease into a smile. He pointed to my other hand. I looked down at the potato I held in my fist. “Is that one going to fall, too?”

I stuttered for a moment before his smile penetrated the fog of my thoughts. I drew back my arm, and he chuckled as he quickly ducked out the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” he called over his shoulder.

The only answer he received was the reverberating hum of the second potato hitting the closed door.
