“Yes. I haven’t used a car seat in almost a decade. It was prudent to practice.”

“Well, you’ve definitely got it now,” he teased.

“Down, Da!” Brayleigh demanded as she attempted to pull her leg up through the hole and stand up.

“Lucky!” I yelled as he easily caught the entire swing in his arms.

I walked away, wrapping my palm around my throat to calm myself.

Lucky aligned himself behind me and placed his hand atop mine. “Calm, baby. I’m not going to let anything happen to her. Or you.”

I lay my head back against his chest and slipped my hand out from under his, wanting his skin on mine.

His finger found my pulse and stroked it. “It’s all good, baby.”

I nodded and took a deep breath before turning to face him with a practiced smile on my face.

“Okay.” Brayleigh wasn’t with him. Panic flooded my system. “Where is she?” I demanded.

He pointed over my shoulder. “She’s right there. She hasn’t been out of my sight for a second.”

“Wow.” I shook my head. “Parenting isn’t for pussies.”

He laughed and grabbed my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine as he leaned in to brush his lips gently over mine.

“It’s definitely not,” he agreed.

Brayleigh seemed bent on exploring every inch of the park, getting dangerously close to the tree line.

Hands snatching, Brayleigh screaming, Lucky crashing through the trees too late.

One two buckle my shoe. Three four shut that door.

Lucky loped over and scooped her up into his arms, then put her down and chased her back to the play area.

I heaved in a breath. It would not serve to give in to the compulsion.

Hands snatching, Brayleigh screaming, crashing through the trees too late.

I squirmed against the mental distress.

Again.

One two….

I swallowed.

Smiled.

Let it go.

I didn’t take my eyes off her until we headed for home. It was a relief to buckle her into the car seat where I knew she was safe.

I checked the straps, sliding my fingers between the straps and her chest to check for fit. Pulled on the latch to ensure it was secure. Then circled round the car and slid into the passenger seat. After one last visual check of the car seat, I directed my mind to planning my outfit for Drivetrain Saturday night, smiling in anticipation of Lucky’s reaction.
