Despite my best efforts at opening myself up to dating after Christmas, I put myself back on hiatus after the third first date. I told myself it was no great loss. You can’t miss what you’ve never had, right?

The door to the office swung open and Willa breezed inside, her baby bump leading the way.

My hand wrapped around the hilt of a hunting knife, buried in her stomach, blood bathing both of us.

“Hello, beautiful,” I called softly while rounding my desk to help her carry her bags.

“Minty! I can’t see my damn feet. Barrett took away all my nice shoes,” she laughed exasperatedly.

I looked down. Sure enough, she wore lace-up canvas running shoes with her dress.

The laces undo, Willa trips and falls onto her stomach, her face grimacing in pain.

“Did you put them on? Or did he?” I asked, amused. They were double-knotted. That was a relief. I could easily picture that big bear of a man on his knees tying her shoes

A picture of them together flashed in my mind, his big hands wrapped around her naked thighs, his face buried between them, her head thrown back in ecstasy.

“He did,” she laughed again.

She laughed a lot lately. Always blessed with a sunny disposition, now her happiness lit the whole damn sky. After freeing herself from her past, she lived her life to the fullest. Seeing that made me both proud and envious.

Mostly proud.

“Those are sizable double-knots you’re sporting,” I teased. “You may never get them off.”

Slanting me a sideways glance and making me laugh, she assured me, “Believe me. He has no problem getting things off me.”

She looked around. “Is Junie here yet?”

“Do you hear her?” I answered drily.

Willa looked quickly towards the door, then leaned towards me. “Okay, so Lenny is going to pop the question.”

I raised my eyebrows. “He told you?”

“No. He told Barrett. Barrett told me. I’m telling you.” She looked away from me as she busily organized her things on her desk, hung her coat on the rack, and slipped the strap of her purse over her chair. Then she took the bag I still held and began emptying the contents onto her desk.

“Who else did you tell?” I prodded knowingly, leaning my hip against her desk.

Her blue eyes blew wide. “Nobody.” She paused. “And it’s killing me.”

“Mm-hmm,” I teased. “When is this going to happen?”

“They’re having everyone over for a barbecue and he’s going to ask her then.” She pulled a granola bar out of her bag and flopped down into her chair. “I’m so freaking hungry.” She pointed at me with it. “You’re invited, of course.”

The city bus passed by the window.

Bus. Safe travels.

I smiled. “I thought you were offering me your granola bar.”

She widened her eyes and shook her head. “Not on your life, lady.”

The door opened again, and Willa spun around in her seat, a huge smile on her face. “Junie!”

Junie, her white-blond hair trailing behind her, threw her arms up in the air. “It. Is. Gorgeous outside! We should get Spuds and eat in the back. Or on your terrace, Mint.” She swung her gaze around to Willa. “Why are you so happy? You get boned last night?”

Willa scoffed and waved her away with a blush.
