Chapter Twenty-Five– Hope

Usually, I looked forward to Sunday mornings.
But leaving the warmth of Lucky’s embrace chafed. It wasn’t so often that we spent the entire night together that I took the cuddly mornings for granted.
I finished showering and slipped back into Lucky’s bedroom, dropping a kiss on his sleepy face.
Looking down at him, I shook my head. In sleep, he looked even younger.
“What am I doing?” I whispered.
“Getting railed by Captain Cock every night,” he murmured.
I barked out a laugh.

He groaned, throwing his forearm across his eyes. Mornings were not his favorite time of day. “There’s nothing like the sound of that voice first thing in the morning.”
“Can I go get her? Bring her to you?” I held my breath.
He lifted his forearm and peeked at me. “You don’t have to ask to pick her up, Minty. You can touch her, play with her. I’ll share.”

Bile rose in my throat. I swallowed. Smiled. “I’ll just bring her in here to you and then I’ve got to run. Okay?”
“You ever going to tell me what’s behind those smiles?” His stormy blue eyes narrowed on my face.
“There’s nothing really to tell. It’s OCD. The smile is me kind of dismissing it.”
Are you sure it’s OCD?
I took a deep breath, smiled again, tried to make it look more natural as I aimed it at him.
“I don’t have to get her,” I began backpedaling.
