“Judgin’ by Amelia’s behavior, yer wife will like me and everyone else except ye.”

Callan laughed loudly. “Hurry up and have yer meal before ‘tis all gone. I’m headed over to the tables to eat.”

His people ate appreciatively all around him — laughter and jokes erupting from every group. The people of the McKay clan were united for the first time since Magda's death.

But Jonan wondered where Amelia was. He hadn’t seen her anywhere.

“Milaird,” Velma called from behind him, holding a large tray filled with bread and broth. “Milady instructed us to ready yer plate.” She led him to one of the tables where Callan sat.

“Where is me wife?”

“Cleanin’ up, milaird. One of the maids found her a beautiful dress.”

Leah chose that moment to run up to her father once more. “Da,” she whispered to him.

“Aye, little one?”

“Where is she?” she asked in a loud whisper.

“‘Tis time to have yer meal, Leah,” he responded. “Sit.”

He pushed his plate between them and lifted her to the chair beside him. He snipped half a roll and dipped it in broth. His mouthfilled with a burst of delectable flavor. The bread was fluffy and sweet, and the broth tasted like it was made with a lot of beef, which he knew they didn't have.

While he ate, he noticed a rise in whispers among his people.

“She is coming,” they whispered.

The courtyard fell silent as excitement filled the air.

Amelia entered the large courtyard wearing a forest-green dress. It was made of expensive muslin and had a beautiful bodice. Her ginger curls were tied on either side of her head, drawing attention to her beautiful and spotless face.

And her body… dear God in heavens! If he thought she was beautiful before, he was speechless now. The dress clung to her curves, exposing just enough to look decent while emphasizing every slope and edge of her lovely body.

“Is that her, Da? She looks like a princess!” his daughter’s sweet voice said beside him, and he couldn’t agree more.
