CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

Jonan stood outside Amelia's room the next morningbut he couldn't bring himself to knock.

Why had she lied to me? What else did she lie about? Did she have lay with me only to make her lie infallible?

Jonan questioned many things, but Amelia never showed up at his door. She never returned to comfort him or explain why she had done it.

She told me—but it had not been enough. Jonan had tried to make excuses for his wife all night, but she had spoken her truth, and he knew he was only deceiving himself.

So, when he saw the first rays of sunlight sneak into his room, Jonan jumped out of bed and resolved to go to her. But he hesitated. It was that moment that he got distracted by the sound of footsteps coming up the stairs.

“Laird McKay,” Mae said politely as soon as she saw him.

“Good mornin’ to ye, Mae,” Jonan said with a fake smile as he made his way down the stairs, feeling everyone's eyes fixated on him.

“Milaird,” the servants called, but they never looked him in the eyes.

Jonan's fists clenched as he thought about that vile Englishman. He regretted not attacking himbut he didn't want to disappoint his people or Amelia... Nora. Jonan reminded himself.

“Nora,” he pronounced again.

“Milaird!” Callan called.

Jonan relaxed his fists as the commanderapproached him.

“How are yefarin’?” he asked with concern.

“I wish nae to speak of it,” Jonan replied sharply.

“I ken that ye daenae wish to speak of it, but yer people have questions as does the council,” his friend explained.

Jonan was aware of this, but he did not wish to address them at this time — hewas so filled with anger and sadness that he didn't care what other people thought of him.

“They should haveNora answer their questions,” Jonan said nonchalantly.

“Who is Nora?” Callan asked confused.

“Amelia… look, it does nae matter anymore. Ye brought me news, nae?” he said, evidently trying to change the subject.

Jonan noticed an expression of worry adorn his friend's face.

"I am fine." he assured him.

"Aye," Callan muttered.

“So, what news did ye have for me?” he asked once more.

"There has been good news from the farmers," Callan began as they approached the gate.

Jonan simply nodded and remained silent. He had never considered himself to be responsible for the farms' turn of luck as Nora had been the one that brought smiles and hope to the clan.

I trusted her, and she lied to me. How could I have led me people astray?A part of him wished to remain angry at her, but another part still believed her. And this part angered him even more.

He mounted his steed and rode ahead of Callan.

“What other news have ye for me?” he further asked.

“There are more incidents of fevers breakin’ among the people,” Callan said grimly but Jonan did not provide any comments.
