“Good night, Miss Blair.”

“Good night,” she murmured while turning towards her bed. She threw herself against the mattress, allowing it to suck her inside. Staring up at the ceiling, she didn’t think she could possibly get any rest. She should probably go down to the main hall and join the others for their dinner, but the silence was welcoming. Strangely, she had become so used to being alone that being around others was tiring.

She also didn’t want to see Aindreas.

Nor Alisa.

She didn’t want to see his cruel smile, hear him call her a beggar or a mistress. She didn’t think she could hold her tongue if he said the words again, and surely there would be a larger crowd than there was in the afternoon. Her thoughts went to Sorcha, wondering what she looked like, wondering if she wore beautiful dresses, like a princess from a storybook. Aindreas would be her handsome prince, and they would live happily ever after together.

For those born in nobility deserved someone of their station.

And for those born a commoner, like herself, deserved nothing more than a simple villager and a simple life with a roof over their head and food in their belly. She didn’t know why, but the thought brought tears to her eyes. Blair rolled over, clutching the pillow to her cheek while swallowing a sob. She should be grateful for everything the laird had done for her, yet all she felt was more alone than she had was before.
