“Is someone here?” she whispered, her hands sliding up his front, clutching onto his chest.

He shivered at the tender caress, holding her even closer. His hand slid up her back, stroking her dark hair and enjoying the softness of her locks. The touch made him yearn for more. He wanted to know what her skin felt like under his. He wanted to feel her breath against his lips.

“I thought I heard something in the bushes,” he said while breathing her in, enjoying the way she smelled like herbs from spending her time with that old goat, Tavis. He buried his nose into her strands, taking more of her scent in, trying to memorize the way she smelled, the way she felt.

“Really?” Blair turned, her cheek rubbing against his and sparking heat within his groin. A dark thought taunted him, urging him to take her here and now, in this garden while his father watched. “I didn’t hear anything.” Her nails dug into his chest as her trembling grew, and he wondered how those nails would feel digging into his shoulders as he took her. “Do ye think it’s an assassin sent by the MacAlisters?”

Aindreas would have laughed at the fear in her voice, yet he found himself wanting to protect her, treat her tenderly as if she were his mistress and not his father’s. He clenched his jaw at the thought, knowing that could never happen. His spies had told him of Blair’s coming and going from his father’s quarters, which occurred throughout the day.

She was no saint, he reminded himself.

Aindreas smiled bitterly while leaning forward, whispering in her ear, “Fear not, lassie, for I would never permit any harm to come yer way.”

He enjoyed the way she leaned into his touch, the way her hands slid up his chest to circle around his neck. Aindreas swallowed, feeling heat creep up his neck. Perhaps, he liked the way she clung to him too much.

“I should return ye to yer rooms,” he said, his hands sliding away from her waist, lingering for a moment at her hips.

“Is it safe? Shouldn’t we find somewhere to hide? Should we alert yer father?”

Aindreas watched her look around before sliding his gaze upwards, finding the light in the window now diminished. He heard Blair padding away, finding her bending over, grabbing the candle near the bench. There was such fear in her eyes, and he cursed himself for putting her in the middle of his fight against his father. He wondered if his father was angry and would demand a word with him in the morning. Or perhaps he would order for Blair’s return to her village.

“Aye, it’s safe,” he said, taking her hand and tugging her back to his side.

His heart fluttered at her fingers lacing with his, and they walked into the castle in silence, padding quietly down the hall towards her chamber. Aindreas’s mind raged as they walked, planning his next course of action. He didn’t know what he was doing. He felt as if he was being pushed and pulled, not knowing which path to take. He wanted to take Blair. He wanted to see what expression she would make if he followed her inside her chambers or if he pushed her up against the door, lifting her skirts and taking her in the hall.

Aindreas wanted to know what her moans would sound like as he entered her. He wanted to see her head tossing back and forth against the pillow. His cock twitched at his volatile thoughts, and he found himself feeling both frustrated and guilty. He should take her now, a dark thought whispered. Aindreas had half the heart to shove her door open and see just what tricks she used on his father.

Yet, when they came upon her door, he stood there awkwardly, reminding himself of Daniel and his innocent ways. He closed the distance between them, licking his lips, feeling the urge to press them against hers to feel their softness.

Instead, he found himself pressing them against her forehead, kissing her so tenderly even he was stunned. “Goodnight, Blair,” he whispered to her, stroking his hand through her hair before turning on his heel.

Aindreas walked briskly down the hall, not turning around, for he knew if he did, he would run back to her room and claim her. He didn’t understand why he felt this sudden urge to have her, this need to treat her tenderly as if she were his own lover.

Throwing open his door, he slammed it shut, not caring who he woke in his frustration. He leaned against the door, tilting his head back and shaking his head at himself. This was wrong, he told himself. This whole thing was terribly wrong. He couldn’t get her innocent green eyes out of his head or the soft blush on her cheeks. Her image haunted him while he slowly wilted to the floor. His heart raced as he remembered her cool hands pressed against him, her fingers against his. All he wanted to do was feel them once more.

He clenched his jaw and lightly knocked his head against the wooden door. Women had always come easily to him. His intentions had always been clear, yet this was the first time he had tried to seduce a woman to ruin her, and he hated the way it made him feel. He hated the way she made him feel.

Aindreas sat on the floor, unable to sleep. The first rays of light seeped into the room while he tried to figure out his next course of action. He shouldn’t do this to Blair, he decided. This was already getting to be too much for him.

He should stay as far away from her as possible.
