Blair shook her head. “I cannot,” she breathed while tugging her hand from his, her body finally listening to her commands.

Daniel frowned, slowly rising from the ground.

“I’m sorry, but I cannot, Daniel. It wouldn’t be right.” She licked her lips. Her brows furrowed as she thought of Aindreas, probably speaking with Sorcha and Laird Cambel within the keep. “I love another, Daniel.”

Daniel seized her hand, bringing it close to his chest. “I understand, Blair. Truly I do, but—“ he paused, a grimace taking hold of his features. He shook his head. “Nevermind. Please, just think on it. Ye don’t have to give me an answer now. I will wait.”

Blair nodded, feeling numb in both body and mind. She needed to be alone. Slowly, she turned around, her body taking her away from Daniel.

“Blair, where are ye going?” she heard Daniel call after her.

“The forest,” she said. “I need to collect herbs for Tavis.”

It wasn’t a lie, for that is where she wanted to go. She knew she should gather her horse and leave, but she needed a moment to reclaim her sense of calm. The forest would aid her with its serene beauty and its calming silence.

And perhaps Tavis would be happy if she brought him some herbs for his provisions when she returned.
