"Fine," Lex said, raising the blade high into the air. He brought his hand down quickly, but Joon caught him around the waist and yanked him away before he could stab the Alpha.

"What the hell?" Lex yelled.

I moved away from them, my wolf anxious and on high alert. The sudden movement made me surprisingly nervous.

"You can't attack someone unarmed and unconscious," Joon yelled, ripping the dagger out of Lex's hand and throwing it on the ground. "There's no honor in it."

Lex rolled his eyes. "Fucking werewolves and your fucking honor. I just don't get it. He killed your mate. Now you kill him. It's that simple."

"I will not anger the Moon by robbing her right to decide my fate. If she wishes for this Alpha to be able to defeat me, then that's the way it is. But I have to fight him while he's awake!"

"Ah, yes," Lex snapped. "The stars and the moon. We can't forget what they want, can we?" he mocked. "Just remember that your gods up there wanted both your mates dead. The moon wanted to torture you and hurt you and force you to walk across hell and creation just to hand you the asshole that killed someone you fucking loved! But you can't even appreciate that, can you? No! Instead, you just stand here like a bitch and spout —"

Joon grabbed him by the throat and slammed him against a tree. "Watch it, Siren," he growled, his muscles twitching with razor-thin restraint.

Lex struggled to get a proper hold of Joon's hands, but his face remained relaxed and calm. "Careful there, Wolf," he smiled, narrowing his eyes. "Don't start something you might not be able to finish."

Lex's pointed nails slid easily into Joon's flesh, but the Alpha didn't even blink as he held the siren's throat firmly in his hands.

"You have got to be kidding me!" I yelled. "We are moments away from Vaesen, with one of the Alphas at our feet, and you two are acting like this?" I snatched the dagger off the ground and threw it at Joon's feet, piercing the earth. "If you're going to insist on acting like fucking children, then do me a favor and kill each other already because I'm too tired for this shit!"

I turned my attention to Byriel, jerking the Alpha's head up by the hair and slapping him hard across the face.

He stirred. I slapped him again. Harder.

The Alpha blinked then rolled his head back, his eyes taking forever to focus. Finally, he cocked his head, taking me in, a glint of recognition in his eyes. Then he laughed. He sounded weak and rough, but the crazy bastard laughed.

The Alpha By The River

I loosenedmy grip from around Lex's neck and let him down. My wolf's displeasure with how upset our Omega was overpowered my need to put the siren in his place. I shoved down my frustration and focused on Byriel. I'd tend to Tzidal's feelings later.

"Do you know who I am?" Tzidal asked, crouched right in front of the Alpha.

I didn't like how close she was. One swift movement and Byriel could snap her neck before I could blink. But I kept quiet, fighting every instinct in my body. I could tell my Omega needed this. She needed to look the Alpha in the eye and talk to him. But I still angled my shoulders forward, ready to rush the fucker and make his death as painful as possible should he lay a finger on her.

"The Omega from the Madra Village." His voice was raspy and dry. His eyes drooped, and his head swayed a bit as he struggled to keep himself upright.

"Are you drunk?" Lex asked, eyeing the wolf with disgust.

"No," he sighed heavily. "Bit."

He moved slowly, pulling up the side of his shirt to reveal a nasty mark just above his hip. The skin was shiny, tight, and an angry shade of red. It looked painful.

I smiled.

"Fucking snake, or something like that, got to me in the cursed lands," the Alpha moaned, sweat blooming across his forehead.

"Why did you kill my mate?" Tzidal asked, her voice serene and soft.

"I didn't," he grunted as he shifted slightly.

Tzidal flung her hand forward and smacked his side, right over his wound. The Alpha curled over, a strangled yell leaving his lips as he gagged.

"Why did you kill my mate?" she asked again, a little louder but still calm. I could smell the anger flowing off her in waves as she kept her eyes on Byriel, waiting patiently for him to stop heaving. She looked fierce. I was so fucking proud of her.

With great effort, Byriel pushed himself back up, leaning his head back against the tree. Sweat beaded and rolled down the sides of his face, dripping off his chin, and his chest rose and fell quickly with each gasping breath.
