"You shouldn't make light of what the witches read."

"You shouldn't take something so seriously that demands the death of your people," she snapped, emotion finally lacing her tone. I found a little more comfort in it. I could understand rage, revenge, and hatred. But her serene composure, while comforting at first, was making my wolf pace and eyes twitch. It wasn't natural for a wolf to be so calm with so much intensity hanging in the air.

The soft movement of feet caught my attention. Joon’s eyes were fixed on me as he edged a little closer to Tzidal, trying so damn hard to conceal a snarl. I was sure if the Alpha let it slip, the Omega would be livid.

"You're right," I said looking back at Tzidal. "Our pack comes before everything else. I will help you kill Hida. I allowed him to torture too many for too long. I owe it to the dead to make it right. And I will help you find that last wolf."

Tzidal's expression went dark, and she looked at me with thick tension between her eyes as her fingers brushed gently over a leather strap tied to her wrist. It made my wolf bristle, feeling the challenge behind her glare.

"I need your help to find Hida. I don't need you to find the last wolf," she said firmly.

I nodded, figuring as much. I was so damn conflicted. The Moon wanted me to help them end Hida, but what was I supposed to do about her promise to kill my father? It was too bold and went against everything I believed. I couldn't just let her walk away after this to find that last wolf. Because if anyone could do it, this Omega was capable.

"Will you kill me once it's done? Once you have your revenge?" I asked, thinking of how I had begged her to end my suffering when they first found me. The pain in my mind and body was too consuming at the time, but now, death didn't seem as seductive as she once did.

"Do you still want that?" Her voice was soft again, almost sympathetic. It was unsettling.

"Let's get some rest while we can," Joon said loudly, making Tzidal flinch. "This may end up being a very long night for us, and we'll need our energy."

"Come here, puppy," the siren cooed with open arms on the other side of the fire. Tzidal smiled and moved quickly into his embrace.

I couldn't help but wonder how anyone could lay so peacefully with such a dangerous creature. How did the Omega not feel as if she was sleeping on the edge of a blade? One bad dream and the siren could flay her in his sleep with incredible ease.

I lingered on the edge of our camp, looking over the familiar forest. The city was just within my sight—the blue and red rooftops peeking out between the tree's leaves.

I had been gone from home for so long, and it felt good to feel the friendly breeze on my skin again.

"I'm warning you now," Joon stepped up next to me, "don't try anything fucking stupid tonight. Do you understand me?" The Alpha's fists were clenched tightly, his knuckles white.

"I gave you my word," I said. "I'll help you find Hida."

Joon rounded on me, his jaw clenched. I fought the urge to lunge at him, knowing I had no right to meet his rage.

"You murdered my mate," Joon seethed. "You are a gutless mutt with no right to walk this land, but Tzidal seems to think you have worth at the moment, and that is the only reason I haven't ripped you to pieces."

I listened, trying to keep from baring my teeth. His fuming scent hung heavy in the air, taunting my wolf.

"If you do anything, and I mean fucking anything to put her in danger,” he gritted out, motioning to the Omega, “I will end your pathetic life in the most painful way I can imagine." His face was red, and his shoulders shook slightly as he spoke, his wolf inching forward. "I've had over a year of tracking your ass down to imagine all the different ways I could torture you. Do not test me."

I held his eyes, trying like hell to push down my wolf's demand that I meet his challenge. I reminded myself the Alpha's anger was justified, then I forced my eyes down to the forest floor, submitting to his rage. My wolf blazed with a violent fury inside me.

Tzidal's hushed whispers drifted toward us, and I looked over, seeing the Omega and siren speaking quietly to one another while huddled at the base of a tree. Joon's eyes immediately softened as he looked at her.

I couldn't quite place their relationship. I assumed they were together. She had a mating bite and reeked of the Alpha, but she was so defiant. I had never seen an Omega act in such a way to their mate, and I wondered what kind of wolf Joon was for allowing her to behave like that. No self-respecting Alpha would dare to let such a weak creature have so much control over them.

Tzidal looked over the flames toward us, and her eyes caught Joon's. She stiffened, then rolled away, her movements sharp and deliberate. Joon deflated a bit at the action.

"Is Omega Tzidal your mate?" I asked. I knew the question would piss him off, but I couldn't help it. While I had no right to challenge him, I could still provoke him a bit. Tzidal was clearly tied to his heart, and right now, it was bleeding for the Omega.

"Don't talk about her. Don't look at her. Don't fucking think about her," Joon snarled softly, the air crackling with his restrained fury.

"She doesn't seem very happy with you," I said, fighting the urge to smile.

"Shut the fuck up," Joon gritted out before stalking back toward the fire.
