A sharp howlechoed across the dark sky, making me shiver. I wrapped my arms around myself, feeling exposed and vulnerable. My pants laid on the ground not far from me, but I didn't move for them. Too frightened of the things I couldn't see.

Korban's wolf slowly stalked past the willow's long branches and out into the meadow. Yellow eyes flashed, watching us just beyond the tree line. I whipped my head around frantically, trying to find anyone else watching us. A second pair of eyes flashed in the dark, and I whimpered.

The meadow, while small, was completely open outside of the cluster of willows. There was nowhere to go or hide. If I ran, they'd see me.

Two dark creatures stalked their way out of the forest, teeth bared and hackles raised. The thick smell of Alpha overwhelmed my senses, overpowering Korban's soft scent and causing my wolf to panic. I laid on my stomach and peeked up over the grass, desperate to be as small as possible.

One of the wolves, black and massive, lunged at Korban, but he quickly dodged the attack and sprinted straight for a tan wolf. He jumped onto her back and bit down, causing her to yip and flail.

I covered my head with my arms and cried, fear coursing through my veins, making me tremble uncontrollably. The pounding in my ears thundered so loudly I could barely hear the growls and snarls of the wolves ripping into one another. My nose caught the faint scent of blood and my breath caught in my throat. An image of Korban lying injured or lame barreled through my mind, but I shook my head, trying to shove it away.

He'd be able to fight them off. Right?

A yip pierced the air, and a painful tremor ran down my spine. I whimpered, desperately wanting to crawl into myself and disappear.

"What do we have here?"

I spun, then kicked away from the large, naked Alpha. He towered over me, his bulging muscles flexing with each step.

"Hello there, little Omega." An evil grin spread across his pale face, his bloody teeth on full display. "Why don't you come with me?"

I jumped up and ran as fast as I could through the branches and out into the meadow. The evil wolf's laughter rang in my ears as I pumped my legs, willing myself to be faster. I could see the other two unknown wolves in the distance but not Korban. He was gone...just gone.

I stopped abruptly, not sure where to go. There was no way I could outmaneuver three Alphas.Where was Korban? Where was my mate?Tears poured down my cheeks as I sunk to my knees. Fear completely overtaking me.

"Come on," the evil Alpha said as he walked up behind me and grabbed me by the hair.

He dragged me toward the other two wolves. I swiped at the hand tangled in my hair as I repeatedly tried to stand, but he walked too fast, jerking my body with each step. My small frame skidded across the uneven ground, and my hip smacked into a sizable rock before he finally came to a stop in front of the other wolves.

I let out a quick sob. The fierce, tan wolf pinned Korban's wolf form to the ground beneath her. She snarled at me, then sunk her claws deeper in his back, making Korban's wolf yip. Blood poured freely from his shoulder, and he had deep claw marks down his side.

"Korban!" I yelled out. I tried to move toward him, but the evil Alpha held my hair firm in his grip, jerking me back.

A black wolf moved toward me and shifted, rolling his shoulders as he straightened up. He stopped just in front of me and studied my face for a moment. He was tall and muscular, a typical Alpha, with rich, dark skin and soft green eyes. His eyes didn't feel right for the torment he was inflicting. It was almost like he felt bad.

"Let her go," he said firmly to the Alpha holding me hostage.

"Shift, or we'll kill her," the evil Alpha spat at Korban, completely ignoring the order and holding me firmly in place.

A soft whine left Korban's throat before he melted back into his human. The tan wolf removed her claws, pulling a deep grunt of pain from my mate, then stepped away. Korban laid motionless for a moment, breathing slowly and deeply. He was covered in sweat and grunted hard when he finally pushed himself up onto his knees.

"What the fuck do you want?" Korban demanded.

"You're marked, aren't you?" the black wolf asked, running a hand through his short, thick black hair.

"Marked?" Korban squared his shoulders, head held back.

I couldn't help but think how strong he looked, even overpowered and forced to his knees. But it wouldn't take him long to regain the upper hand. I knew my mate. All he needed was one good opening, and he'd kill them all. He would protect me.

"Show us your fucking mark," the evil Alpha roared, snapping my head as he spoke. A whine left my lips as tears rolled down my cheeks once more.

"Hida!" the black wolf yelled. "She's not our target. There's no need to hurt her."

"You're too fucking soft, Byriel," he sneered.

The evil Alpha, Hida, removed his fingers from my hair and grabbed my chin. He urged me forward and forced me to look directly at Korban. "Show us your mark, or you'll watch her die. Do not make us look for it," he warned.

"I'm not marked," Korban growled, his teeth bared. I could see his claws growing as he glared at the wolf touching me.
