His face flushed, and his eyes suddenly widened with fear. "I'm so sorry, alpha!" He held up his hands as if I were going to launch myself across the small space and attack him. His fear confused me for a moment. "I didn't mean to say the King was horrible. I just meant—”

"Blue," I whispered, trying to push my calm voice into him. "It's okay. I understand what you meant, and I agree. The lack of memories of those that loved us is sometimes kinder than being forced to know them."

Nodding, Blue let out a thankful breath. His skin seemed to brighten slightly for a moment. His dark eyes moved over my face, and he twisted his fingers together. "I'm just so sorry," he whispered.

I inched closer, wanting so badly to touch him. It was fucking agony not to. "Can I ask," I said, feeling that as long as we were talking, I would be too distracted to act on my instincts. "Your skin. You seem to glow. You appear to get brighter sometimes."

Blue fidgeted, looking very uncomfortable. It wasn't the reaction I had expected. "Yeah." He pressed his lips together, looking as if he might cry.

"You don't have to talk about it," I said. It had not been my intention to make him feel bad.

"I can't always control it." His voice was so soft I had to lean in to hear him. "My grandma used to call it pulsing. It's a fae thing. A few of the full-blooded fairies that lived in my village tried to teach me how to control it, but I don't have the same power they do. I'm not strong enough to own it."

Giving in to the intense need to feel his skin, I reached out. Blue's eyes widened at my outstretched hand, and his whole body trembled. He looked up at me, and I could feel my eyes glow red at the soft, frightened look on his face.

Snapping myself out of it, I leaned back, hating that I terrified him. I was failing miserably at trying to court him. It only made sense. I failed at most things.

"Blue?"

"Yes," he whispered, keeping his eyes on the stone at his feet.

"I'm sorry I scare you. Please, know I would never hurt you."

He chewed on his bottom lip, moving his eyes to his hands, then slowly, he nodded. "You do scare me."

I let out a shuddering breath, trying not to display my heartache, then stood. My wolf was a violent mess within me, begging me to stay put and claim our omega. "I'm sorry," I whispered, keeping my eyes on the entrance of the little cove. "I'll sit outside near the water. I'll keep my distance."

Placing my foot on the smooth stone, I moved to step up when a small hand touched my back.

"No," Blue said. The single word was somehow so jittery and filled with…something. I couldn't place the emotion.

I turned slowly, trying not to frighten him further with any sudden movements. His hypnotic eyes glowed in the moonlight, and his velvety cheeks were wet from his damp hair.

"You," he nervously licked his lips, "don't scare me like that."

I didn't know how to speak. The way his eyes roamed over my face and his little bow of a pout struggling to speak. His gentle nature made me stupid.

"What do you mean?" I sounded so weak, but I didn't care.

Moving slowly, Blue carefully pressed his hands to my chest. His fingers were so cold, and the chill felt good on my hot skin. I lost myself for a moment in his beautiful scent.

Then my wolf purred.

I could not remember a single moment in my life when my beast had ever purred.

My whole life, I was simply an extension of my father's right arm, sent out to fulfill his most violent whims. I never had lovers or indulged in frivolous activities. I was just a weapon. I had no reason to purr.

But right now, with this soft, sweet omega looking up at me, I felt a little more human. My heart thundered for him, and my head spun. He was kind and calm, and curious. He was perfect, and he was looking at me with something wonderful hidden in his eyes.

"You do scare me," he said again. "But it's not…I mean…"

He glanced away quickly as if gathering the courage before looking back up with a sudden fire in his eyes.

Blue pushed himself onto the balls of his feet and placed a small, soft kiss on my lips. I felt his bottom lip tremble ever so slightly, and my wolf stretched out in euphoric bliss. Then very slowly, Blue settled back onto the ground.

He swallowed thickly, waiting for my reaction. I was scared to move. Worried I'd consume him if I lifted even a finger.

He bit his bottom lip, removing his hands from my chest. "Um, I—"
