"You left me!"

Blue swiped a hand through the air, his palm landing on my cheek. He had no strength in him, and I barely felt it on my skin, but it carried the weight of a rolling boulder to the gut.

He drew his hand back again as a sob ripped from his throat. I caught his wrist and spun him hard, forcing his back to my chest. His whole body went limp, and he crumpled in my arms. He sobbed and coughed and sputtered onto the forest floor as I eased us both onto the grass. I softened my hold and rocked him gently, his whole body wracking with horrific sobs.

"Everyone leaves me," he wept. "No one wants me, and everyone leaves."

"Blue, I didn't leave you," I whispered. "I just needed a moment."

It wasn't a lie. I had every intention of returning to the camp, then explaining to Blue why we needed to go our separate ways. But right now, with his distress filling my lungs and his heart breaking in my arms, I no longer cared what was right or what was smart. I just wanted to keep him.

"Everyone hates me," he mumbled, his chest heaving.

"I don't hate you," I said firmly, hugging him tighter. "No one could ever hate you."

He glanced at me over his shoulder, his wet eyes narrowing and his mouth tight. "I killed my mother when she birthed me, so my father forced me on my grandmother. Then when I was a pup, I pulsed and, and I accidentally k-killed her." His lips trembled as tears poured down his soft cheeks. "My pack encourages me to leave our boundaries because I'm too dangerous. And Iamdangerous." He gulped down a big breath of air. "I let those guards through our borders, and they killed my pack.Ikilled everyone."

He inhaled a deep, angry breath, then screamed, "And then you left me!"

"I want you." I spun him hard, forcing him to look in my eyes. I looked at him with so much intensity and honesty I hoped it scared him. "I want you!" I yelled, my eyes flashing red.

Blue's fire dimmed, his eyes going soft and mouth slightly open.

"You are mine!" I roared. The force of my voice made him flinch, but he kept his eyes on me.

I felt unhinged and possessive. I wanted to strip him naked, lick every inch of his soft skin, then sink my teeth into his warm, wet throat. I wanted him more than anything else in this world. More than my father's acceptance, or my pack's safety, or my own fucking sanity.

I just wanted him.

Blue swallowed hard, his breath starting to even out. "Don't go," he said in a breathy whisper. "I'm so scared of the things you make me feel," he pressed a hand to his chest, "but it scares me even more to think I'll never feel this way again. Please, keep me."

My heart swelled, and my skin warmed. Without stopping to think, I nodded, leaning in to scent his sweet breath, "Will you keep me as well?"

He smiled at my words, a silent promise passing between us. I couldn't help but smile too. It felt so good to look happy and mean it.

Cupping my omega's cheeks, I held him in place as I moved my nose over his chin and mouth. I dragged my lips over one cheek, then slowly licked the tears off his beautiful face. He let out a breathy laugh, and I moaned, making a shiver work through his thin body.

My perfect mate.

Fuck, this was a stupid decision.

Perhaps life in Ossory wasn't meant for either one of us. Perhaps I could abandon all of this. Death, pain, treason, vengeance. I could leave all of it.

Blue and I could live in the faelands or near the sea.Hell, I'd take him all the way to Myphic if it meant his happiness. But wherever we ended up, I would keep him safe, even if it killed me.

"Who's there?" A familiar voice cut through the trees, and I crushed Blue to my chest, desperate to hide him in my arms.

I forced my attention away from my omega and concentrated on the forest around us. On the other side of a few pine trees, Kenji, a palace guard I had known for many years, walked straight toward us. His eyes lit up as he recognized me. He picked up his pace, moving quickly through the trees.

He took in the sight of the distressed omega in my arms, and his smile fell. "Sir, are you okay?" he asked, his eyes moving between Blue and me.

"I'm fine," I said, standing. I picked Blue up, not giving him the option to walk. He wrapped his legs around my waist and hid his face in my neck, too scared to look at the unknown alpha.

"We all thought you were dead." Kenji took a disbelieving breath, standing back a bit to look me over.

"I'm very much alive." I gave him a quick nod, fighting the urge to run away with Blue tucked firmly against my body.

I turned slightly, looking toward the camp, then back at Kenji. I couldn't go back the way I had come. I couldn't risk all the wolves Dane had worked so hard to protect. They just wanted to keep their lives, something the King was determined to rip from them.
