"But you do have it?" Her voice rose, each word punctuated hard.

I nodded again.

"Prove it!" Her teeth lengthened and a growl pushed from her chest—a chest that heaved with far too much cleavage.

I smirked and narrowed my eyes at the devilish woman."Paranoid?"

Strayton held my narrowed gaze for a moment before finally letting out a melodic laugh. She swished her hair as she turned away from me, and crossed the room to the table at the back."I'm not interested in whatever little game you're playing here, Theo.I know you think you're cute, but I have too much riding on this." She drained her wine and set the glass on the table before turning to me again."And I have every fucking right to be paranoid. My father is out of control. He's convinced I'm out of control, and no one can find Byriel.Paranoia is the very heartbeat of my father's house."

"Byriel has returned," I said.I was a little surprised she didn't already know since it was rumored he was here.

Her eyes widened with either shock or rage.I couldn't tell. "How do you know?" she growled, baring her teeth.

It was definitely rage.

"I have my sources, My Lady," I smiled and winked, trying to ease her temper. When Lex crossed a line with his pointed attitude, he always winked, and the ridiculousness of his words would feel much less offensive.I just hoped it worked on this she-wolf.

"You'll forgive me if I don't believe you," she snapped, placing her hands on her hips."Although it would make me very happy if it were true.To have Byriel back…." She looked down as if deep in thought, then whispered, "I need my brother. Now more than ever."

Silence hung in the air as she stared at the carpet.I inhaled deeply, trying to figure out what was happening in her head. Her perfume was still sharp and angry, and I couldn't pull any sadness or relief off her.

Everything about this she-wolf felt wrong.

"I heard there were issues in Cristal Terre. What happened?" Strayton's voice caught me off guard, and I snapped my eyes to her.Her expression was set, all business.

I shook my head, trying like hell to be as vague as possible."Nothing to worry yourself with, My Lady."

"Why did it take you so long to arrive?" She narrowed her eyes as if seeing me for the first time.

I gave the room a sweeping glance."I don't think we should talk here," I whispered, looking at the tent's entrance.Thankfully the bustle of dozens of wolves could be heard just outside, giving my words a little more weight.

"Paranoid?" she smirked.

I smiled wide and nodded at her turn in my words.Strayton bit her bottom lip, her mouth glossy and red.

My wolf whimpered, begging me to cut and run, find our mate and fuck her wild to prove our devotion.

"You know," Strayton let out a breathy sigh. Her eyes moved over my chest, then lower."You aren't what I expected."

"What did you expect?" I had no fucking clue what to say anymore.I just needed to kill time until she dismissed me.

"I guess I expected you to be old and ugly. You are much younger than I expected." She tilted her head as if thinking."And you were much more forward in your letters than you are in person. How can someone be so flirty and dirty on paper yet so stiff in person?" She leaned forward a bit, a gleam in her eye."I think you need something to take your mind off that long journey."

She slid her bottom over the edge of the table, gripped the slit in her dress, and slowly pulled it to the side.I swallowed hard, my eyes pulling to her lap against my will.Soft, dark curls at the apex of her thighs dripped with slick.Every muscle in my body locked up, fear and uncertainty flooding my veins.

"My Lady." The voice of the young alpha that brought me here cut through the tent's entrance.

Strayton jerked her dress back in place, smoothing the fabric over her thighs."What?" she snapped, her eyes flashing red.

"Alpha Byriel is here to see you, ma'am."

Fiery excitement filled her eyes, and she quickly hopped off the table.Closing the space between us, she quickly kissed my lips, catching me off guard. My wolf snarled long and low at me.

"It's really happening, Theo." A quiet giggle lept from her throat, her voice a breathy whisper, "If I'm careful, I might end up getting everything I've worked so hard for."

I forced a smile and nodded.

Her nose scrunched with excitement before she fixed her face and spoke in a dignified manner."Get behind my dressing screen," she pointed to a partition covered in black silk.I don't need Byriel asking any questions."
