I gripped my dagger and flung my arms out to shield the youngling. Blue kept sniffling, but I held firm, determined to protect him the best I could from Byriel's approaching beast.

The alpha gripped my arm and flung me away. My strength was nothing to his, and I was easily ripped away from the omega. I landed with a grunt, rolling away from the pair.

Scrambling to my feet, I turned to find Byriel looming over Blue. I raised my blade and lunged, sinking it quickly into Byriel's bicep. I didn't want to hurt him, but I needed his senses to return.

With his red eyes still locked on Blue's face, Byriel pulled the blade from his flesh. Then he tossed the dagger lazily at my side.

He closed the space between him and the frightened omega, pushing into his neck. Blue's bottom lip trembled, and his eyes went wide, pleading with me to help.

A deep vibrating growl filled the room, and Byriel whispered, "Mine."

I didn't know what to do. Byriel was too lost to his wolf.

Inhaling deeply, Byriel dragged his nose over Blue's trembling arms, then his mouth and nose, all the way up to the omega's dark hair. Blue's scent was so sharp with terror, I was amazed the omega wasn't sobbing hysterically, but he seemed so much calmer now that Byriel was slowly scenting him.

Leaning back, Byriel stared at Blue. The intensity in his eyes made me want to look away, but I couldn't. What if he attacked?

Blue let out a soft, jerky breath—his hypnotic eyes brimming with tears and pain. His cheek held a distinctive red mark from the King's assault.

"I'm sorry," Byriel whispered, pressing a bloody hand to Blue's cheek. "I let him hurt you."

Blue shook his head but didn't speak. He curled his fingers into Byriel's shoulders, holding him closer.

"I'm so fucking sorry I did nothing," Byriel sucked in a harsh breath through his teeth. "He looked at you and touched you."

Byriel scooped Blue up, moving to hold him.

Blue flung his arms around Byriel's neck. The alpha's big body softened into Blue, and he slowly moved his arms to cradle his omega. Blue broke apart, weeping openly in his arms.

Feeling it was okay to move, I grabbed my dagger and turned my attention to the tent's entrance. It was still closed—no guards or help rushing in. I swallowed hard at the realization that the violent sounds that drifted from the King's tent must have been commonplace to everyone.

I sheathed my dagger and turned to Byriel, knowing we needed to get out of hereand fast.

The alpha had pulled Blue onto his lap, just holding and caressing him. "Please forgive me," Byriel mumbled against Blue's temple. "Please, Blue. Forgive me, my love."

Blue pulled back, looking over his face. He almost looked too frightened to speak.

"You love me?" His voice was so soft.

I resisted the urge to sneak away. It was so lovely and intimate, but we needed to go.

"You are the only thing I love," Byriel whispered.

"By'" I said. He jerked, seemly surprised to see me here. "We need to go. It's not safe here. We need to find Joon and leave."

The tent flap moved, and the sounds outside became louder.

An impressive female stepped inside. She was statuesque and stunning. A flowing black dress barely covered an impressive amount of cleavage and one long, toned leg. Her eyes went wide as she looked around the destroyed tent, then her attention fell to the King's lifeless body.

Her expression shifted from false innocence to absolute shock to a giddy bliss that set my teeth on edge.

"Oh, baby brother," she said with a husky shiver of excitement. "What have you done?"
