Kylie looks at me, and I realize that I still haven't answered her question. Well, it wasn't exactly a question; she just admitted that she is afraid.

And I'm sure she expects me to answer.

When we step onto the road that divides us from the park where we're going, I see a car coming so fast that it won't be able to stop. I grab Kylie in my arms and jump back to the sidewalk, holding her as close as I can.

The car rushes past, inches from us, honking.

"Asshole!" I yell after it, pressing Kylie's tender body to mine.

She's shaking from fear, and I can't believe I was so inconsiderate. How could I let this happen? This car could've hit us, especially Kylie—she was the first one on the street.

I don't know what I'd do if something happened to her.

I look down into her big, sky-blue eyes. She breathes heavily, looking up at me, her chest heaving.

Her breasts are brushing against my torso.

And my dick jumps again.

I pull away immediately, almost pushing her.

Fuck.

"We have to go," I say rapidly, trying to sound as if nothing happened.

I want to take her by the hand. We used to hold hands all the time.

But now it seems like I better not do it.

I hope she hasn't noticed my erection.

She's looking at me with frustration on her face as if she really can't understand what is going on.

If I only knew, baby, I think, but I don’t say it out loud.

If I only knew what's going on with me, I promise I would tell you.

Chapter Seven

Kylie

Why is he mad at me? Is it because I stepped into the street without looking? But it's not my fault that car almost hit me. Why did Tyler push me away after our hug? He acted like I had cooties.

And he’s acting so weird, not like himself at all. He usually talks non-stop, holds my hand, laughs...

Today he keeps silent and barely even smiles.

What if he didn't miss me as much as I missed him? What if he doesn't want to be friends anymore?

But why would he come to meet me even earlier than we agreed if he doesn't want to see me anymore?

I am not able to finish the thought. The moment we enter the park, I hold my breath; right in the center is a small white gazebo covered with curtains and decorated with lanterns and flowers.

As we walk closer, I see a vast white mattress with pillows on the floor and a small table with fruit and cupcakes at the corner.

"Ty, that's..." I start, but I don't even know what to say. Amazing? Wonderful? But that's not enough to describe what I see.

"Happy birthday, Kylie," he says softly, and my heart melts from those words.
