Why Else?

Istared at the Visa bill and Sean’s scraggly writing along the top of it.

We’ll split it, the writing said.

I tapped my finger on the edge of the table and tried to remember my bank balance. Opening up my laptop, I looked at my cheque account online. The money from Mum and Dad was almost all gone. The house sale hadn’t been finalised yet. I stared at the Visa bill and stared at my company credit card.

Then emptied my cheque account, knowing I wouldn’t be able to buy any food until the end of the month.

The money transferred to the Visa in the way of things on the Internet.

I picked up my cell phone and dialled Sean.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey,” I answered.

Silence.

“I paid my half of the Visa,” I told him.

“You did?”

“Did you think I wouldn’t?”

“It crossed my mind.”

“Well,” I said. “I paid half. You need to pay off the rest and close the account down.”

“What about your credit card?” he asked.

“What about it?”

“You could still use it.”

“I won’t.”

He made a scoffing sound.

“All those new clothes you’re wearing. They don’t come cheap,” he said.

“How do you know about my clothes?” I asked.

“People tell me.”

I sighed. “April or Tayla?”

“Doesn’t matter who. But I know you, Ky. You spend money like there’s no tomorrow. Cut up the card.”

I stared at the Visa bill and at Sean’s scraggly writing.

“Sure,” I said.

“And send it to me,” he added.

“Send you the card?”
