“You really broke my heart when you left that boy,” she added.

I said nothing. She was grieving. I didn’t want her to curl up into a little ball. I let her talk.

“I could not believe a daughter of mine could be so selfish. Could go against the church. I was so ashamed of you, Kylee. You really disappointed me.”

I wanted to tell her she had disappointed me, too.

She’d picked a side.

But I sat there and let her tell me I had failed at being a good daughter and a good wife.
