I’m a confident and competent AO.

Rain drops and reflective paint. Safety cells and twisted metal. The yellow suit of a fireman as he handed me a bag of saline. Adrenaline and excitement. The sense of doing something monumental.

We got him out.

I did my job.

Simon hummed a tune on the way back to the station.

“What have you got planned this weekend? Working?” he asked.

“Nightshift Friday. Rest of the weekend off,” I said.

“Oh, Friday night at the Pitt. What a rush.”

“Yeah,” I said smiling as he grinned back at me.

It never stopped. One callout after the other. In and out of Auckland Hospital, a quick refuel—for the ambulance and not us—and then the pager would go off and we’d start all over again.

I liked being busy. I thrived on it. City life suited me even if I didn't get enough sleep.

“Ambulance calls A 1-8,” came over the radio.

Simon reached forward as he was in the passenger seat this time and picked the handset up.

“A 1-8, corner of K’ Road and Pitt Street. Clear.”

“A 1-8. Priority One to Mt Eden Road. R6.”

“Copy, Comms. Responding.”

I flicked the switch for the beacons and activated the siren while Simon waited for the job to be assigned to our pagers and hit the correct button on our GPS system.

Another day in the Big Smoke.

Another life saved by little old me.

It was a dream, but a hard one. Who knew what the next job would bring?

I’m a confident and competent AO, I told myself silently. But this time it wasn’t so manic.

Maybe I was getting used to it finally.

Or maybe it was because I was driving on this one and the patient would be Simon’s responsibility.

Either way, I took the win, humming as the traffic parted for me.

I was living the dream.
