I’m Working On It

The ad was in the centre of the page. Surrounded by other ads. It had a small border around it, but other than that, it looked just the same as all the rest.

“I’ve never sold anything before,” I told the man sitting across the table from me. He was the one in charge. I’d had an interview already with the other man sitting across the table beside him; this was a callback.

“That doesn’t matter,” the one in charge said. “We’ll teach you how to sell.”

He smiled. I smiled.

“But we can’t teach you how to be you,” he said.

I blinked at him.

“People buy from people they like, Kylee,” he said. “And I like you.”

“Igot the job,” I told Sean.

“That’s great, honey. Let’s celebrate.”

“Dinner out?”

He grimaced. “Bugger! I’ve taken a nightshift at Silverdale. They were desperate.”

“It’s OK. We can celebrate another night.”

“Why don’t you call Cathy or Tayla? Go out on the town with your girls.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“Kylee, you need to keep busy.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“My boss can’t believe you got the job,” my mother’s voice said down the line.

“He can’t?”

“No matter what you put your mind to, Kylee, you seem to be able to achieve it.”

“Thanks, Mum.”

“Of course, you’re no longer a paramedic in the big city.”

“The job comes with a company car, cell phone, and laptop. Does that help?”

“Oh, that’s wonderful dear.”
