Chapter Seven

“Where the devil haveyou two been?” David greeted them crossly as he yanked the car door open for her on the passenger side.

Penny tipped sideways and he caught her before she fell.

“What the... Have you been drinking?”

“What do you think?” she asked sarcastically.

I think if you are not careful, little girl, you’ll be going to bed with a very sore butt!

The thought would have been spoken aloud if she werehisPenny. Not for the first time a sense of aching regret clutched his heart. Where was his girl and was she all right?

“Come on, what you need is a large glass of water,” he told Penny. “I take it you didn’t drink?” he added, turning his attention to Allie who made her own way out of the car.

“Of course not, I was driving! No, my dear sister also drank my share, hence her happy state,” she retorted.

“Asti?” he asked.

“It was Dad—what do you think?” Allie replied.

“You know you can’t take alcohol,” he admonished Penny.

She stuck her tongue out at him and he chuckled but at the same time he slapped her ass. She lifted onto her toes, giving a cute little squeal of surprise.

“Oops, sorry, I forgot...” He felt like an idiot. How could he forget she wasn’t his actual wife?

“S’okay,” Penny said and hiccupped.

She didn’t mind? Well, that was interesting, and at the same time exceedingly good to note.

Clare greeted them both warmly and obviously noted Penny’s state because she immediately poured them a glass of water each. David ushered them to the table and fussed over napkins before going to the fridge to fetch the avocado starters.

“Clare, these look yummy,” Penny cooed.

“I made them actually, while Clare got on with making the chicken chasseur,” he told them.

“So how did the visit go?” Clare asked.
