Gesturing to her that he wanted the phone, David stretched his arm over the table. She handed him the phone.

“Hi, Allie, I actually have a favour to ask of you and Clare. I am taking Penny away for our wedding anniversary next week and since Honey is injured, I am loath to leave her with Max. I know Clare isn’t a vet but she’d have a better idea of caring for her than our gardener... Oh, would you? That’d be wonderful, thanks! Here’s Penny back...”

She and Allie chatted for a bit, then their next course arrived and she ended the call.

“Won’t you at least give me a clue as to where we are going? I need to know if it’ll be hot, on a beach, or cold and snowing,” she cajoled.

He grinned. “Nice try, baby, but all you need to know is we are definitely not flying anywhere.”

Her mouth formed a silent ‘O.’ It seemed David wasn’t prepared to risk losing her on a turbulent flight, which felt heart-warming. He winked at her and reached across the table for her hand, which he brought to his lips.

“You are physically fine, and as far I am concerned you are mentally stable. We’re both convinced of what happened during that flight. I am in love with my wife as much as I was before the switch.” He raised his wineglass. “To us,” he said.

She lifted her Coke. They chinked glasses. “To us,” she echoed.

Chapter Nineteen

The vet drove Honeyhome to them himself and left them with a list of instructions, ranging from her diet to her next appointment in order to have her bandages removed. Jim stressed that the important thing was to curtail her movement as much as possible to allow the fractures to heal. David went and bought a large cage to put her in when she became restless, or they were both out and not there to keep an eye on her. Penny padded the cage with a mattress and blankets. Honey was given a whole array of presents from well-wishers. Most were new toys, which Penny added to the cage. Honey seemed content with her new home within a home and spent a lot of time sleeping voluntarily in her new space.

As the days whisked by, Penny kept pressing David to tell her more about his plans for their anniversary. She desperately wanted to know what to pack, but he brushed her questions aside until one day he’d obviously had enough. He threatened to blister her backside the next time she mentioned packing.

Of course the inevitable happened. She just couldn’t help herself. Sitting became an uncomfortable option for a couple of days before the trip.

With her mind full of the week away, Penny shoved her concerns about age-play aside. She did however sneak out to swing in the garden and colour in her books when David was out of the house. She even quickly changed all her dolls’ clothes. The weather had turned a little chilly for the time of year and she worried they were cold. She salved her conscience with the thought that this was not actually age-play; no, this was simply a hobby. Looking at her dolls’ house, she had another idea. She’d always loved antique dollhouses; perhaps she could become a dollhouse collector and turn one of the attic rooms into a dollhouse emporium?

She phoned her father and had a long chat with him. Still marvelling over the fact he was alive, the time she spent with him since she’d found herself here was precious.

The day before they left, David removed the clothes from her closet that he thought she should take, and laid them on the bed for her to pack.

“I can’t wear that,” she said scathingly, holding up a drab brown skirt.

“It is suede; it clings to you like a glove. You look sensational in it. Pack it, and don’t argue.” He sounded so uncompromising she did as he bid but as soon as his back was turned, she shoved in the clothes she felt most comfortable wearing under his choice of clothing.

It was only as they drove toward Folkestone that it dawned on her that they might be going to Europe. Her suspicions were confirmed when they drove into arrivals at the channel tunnel. Passports and papers checked, they were directed to parking lane B.

“Have I got time to visit the loo, d’you think?” Penny asked anxiously.
