“We’ll get out on level one first,” David reassured her. She smiled gratefully at him. It struck her how attuned to her needs he was.

Wandering around the first platform, Penny marvelled at the giant glass-domed restaurant, Bulle Parisienne.

“Can we eat here one night?” she asked excitedly.

“Already in the plan but not here... Ready for level two?”

They entered the glass lift and she hung onto David as it rose to the next stage. The views around Paris were amazing. Reaching the second tier, she discovered shops and another restaurant.

“This is where we are eating tonight, the Jules Verne,” David informed her. She studied the evening menu.

“Have you seen these prices?” she asked in horror. “A hundred and ninety euros up to two hundred and thirty euros, David. That is preposterous!”

He tugged her away. “This trip is the equivalent of your honeymoon. Don’t worry about it, I have it covered.”

“But...”

“Hey, do you want a spanking on your honeymoon?” he asked, not lowering his voice.

“Da-vid, shush!” she whispered.

He grinned. “Stop fussing, we’re in France where they’re big onla fessee, spanking!”

Glancing around to see if anyone appeared to have overheard their conversation, she saw she need not have worried as everyone made for the tower edge. She spotted a telescope and hurried over in that direction.

She struggled to get the money into the slot required to work the thing. David’s hand appeared in front of her. He pushed the correct amount of coin into the slot.

Manoeuvring the lens, she was incredulous as she saw the silvery bends of the River Seine stretched out before her. Gently turning the machine, Notre Dame came into view, then moving the telescope slowly around, she spotted the Louvre and Montmartre.

“Wow,” she said softly.

“Can I take a look?” Warm breath grazed her neck as David leaned against her back.

“Sure.” She stepped aside and moved back from the rails. David gazed through the telescope while she waited. She glanced about at the crowd, watching as people exclaimed over the view.

“Impressive, huh?” She swung about at the male voice. A tall good-looking man stood near.

“Y-yes, amazing,” she replied. Instantly hands appeared on her shoulders.

“Yeah, a special place for a second honeymoon,” David spoke from behind her.

“Enjoy!” the man said and moved away.

“Jerk!” David muttered.

“David!” she reprimanded, twisting around. “He was being friendly, that’s all!”

He grabbed her jacket collar and hauled her up onto her toes, smacking his lips against hers hard then letting her go.

“You’re such an innocent,” he declared fiercely; grabbing her hand, he tugged her over to the shop entrance. “That man is a creep. You need to stay away from him, he fancies you! Go choose a souvenir,” he growled before she had a chance to confront him.

She did as he suggested without a murmur. She didn’t want to argue today of all days—well, not on any of these special days they were spending in Paris. Selecting a gorgeous crystal block with a 3D image of the tower somehow embedded inside, she collected two and crossed to the till. The tall man from earlier was standing in the queue in front of her. She glanced over to where David was browsing; his back was turned to her.

“So where are you guys from?” the man asked, catching sight of her.

“London,” she replied.

“Oh, I thought your husband sounded American?”
