“The Ritz?” she cried, turning to stare at him in surprise.

“I think we both deserve a treat after saying goodbye to Pippin, and tea at the Ritz is a real treat!” he said, pulling out his phone.

“But your appointment is at four,” she reminded him.

“I’m about to call and cancel.”

She watched as he scrolled down his contact list.

“Hello, Paul? Sorry to do this at such short notice, but can we reschedule our meeting today? Something important has come up that I want to get a handle on before we both meet to discuss the deal. Yeah? I will, thanks, mate. Bye.”

She beamed at him, gleeful; today was going so much better than she could possibly have imagined!

Chapter Seven

David watched Penny’sface as she stared about the room. “It looks just like a fairy palace. I love all the cream and gold, such rich colours!” she exclaimed. He smiled; despite being a darned nuisance, she was incredibly cute. If he wasn’t careful he’d fall for her. He frowned. Why did that matter? Couldn’t he pursue her? There was no need to scare her off, he’d just take things real slow and see how she reacted to him taking care of her as an interested party.

They were directed over to the Palm Court area of the restaurant and seated in a secluded corner.

A waiter approached. David ordered tea. Penny chimed in, requesting Earl Grey tea, her words echoing David’s. He turned to her. “Ah, yes, I remember now, you like Earl Grey too.”

“I do!”

“Okay, make that Earl Grey tea for two, and we’ll take the traditional afternoon tea, please.” He handed back the menu unopened. The waiter left them and he turned to his intriguing guest.

She had bounced into his life the day before and since then he couldn’t seem to get the odd little minx out of his thoughts. She’d shocked him today turning up with the stray dog. Initially he’d wanted rid of them both, but she had a knack of getting under his skin and somehow embroiling him in her crisis. Look at him now... What had driven him to bring her to tea at the Ritz of all places? He hadn’t even brought Fiona here, and yet he was about to pay out a hundred and twenty pounds on a tea for a girl he’d only known five minutes!

“David? David?”

“Hmm?” He looked at her. Her head dipped toward him, her lovely blonde and caramel hair shone under the reflected light from the chandelier above. Wide green eyes watched him, bright with pleasure. A smile caused a cute dimple to form in her left cheek. She looked adorable.

He frowned, determined to see her as a younger sister. Obviously that was the role her brother intended he should take and that was what he would be. She was a vulnerable young woman, left all alone in the world.

“Penny for them?” she asked.

“A double entendre,” he commented.
