“Well, that’s convenient,” he said, leaning down to kiss me. “Race you to the shower?”

He jumped off the bed and walked out, headed toward the bathroom and I followed quickly on his heels.

Maybe Astrid was right. Maybe when you just accept the things that happen, it makes everything better. God knows I felt better knowing Trevor would always be by my side.

He was mine and I was his. Two monsters finding their way through the world together.

Forever.

Yeah…I supposed I could accept that.

~Celia~

Five Years Later…

“Hi, my name is Celia and I’m a werepanther,” I said before rolling my lower lip between my teeth. “And my husband is a werewolf.”

“Yes,” Doctor Kincaid said brightly, beaming at me as she flipped switches on her machine. “And you’re about five months along, is that right?”

“That’s right,” Trevor said as he reached out to grip my hand in his. “We’re just wondering if you can tell us what the baby might be.”

“Well,” the doctor said. “I can probably tell you if it’s a boy or a girl, but we won’t know about its shifting powers without running blood work after it’s born.”

Trevor and I exchanged a look, and I heard the doctor chuckle.

“Do I even want to know what the wager is?” she asked as she squirted warm gel onto my belly.

“Nothing untoward,” Trevor assured her with a laugh. “But the whole family is in on it.”

“Well, I can tell you that it’s about fifty-fifty,” Doctor Kincaid, picking up the wand and pressing it to my skin. “When two different monsters conceive, there’s really no way to guess what powers the baby will be born with.”

A soft whump, whump, whump, sounded from the speaker attached to the monitor and Trevor’s grip on my hand tightened as we both stared at the screen, watching the fluttering heartbeat of our baby displayed before us.

My eyes filled with tears, and I realized for the first time since we’d found out I was pregnant that I didn’t care if it was a boy, a girl, a panther or a wolf. I was completely and utterly in love with this child, and it could be whatever it wanted to be.

“Would you like to know the gender?” Doctor Kincaid asked, turning a grin to us.

“It’s a boy,” Trevor whispered, his eyes wide as he raked his gaze over the picture of our baby.

“That’s the umbilical cord,” the doctor said. She shifted the wand against my stomach, pressing it hard enough to encourage the baby to roll slightly to its side. “But you’re right…it’s a boy.”

Trevor pressed a kiss to the top of my head as the doctor pressed buttons, taking pictures and measurements of our son.

“Everything looks perfect,” the doctor assured us as she put the wand away and handed me a towel to clean up the remaining gel from my skin. “I’ll have pictures printed and you’ll follow up with Jo next month for your checkup.”

“A perfect baby boy,” Trevor said excitedly, leaning down to kiss me firmly on the lips. “You’re incredible.”

“I am, aren’t I?” I teased, reaching up to wipe my tears away. “We’re going to have to pick names.”

“And finally set up the nursery,” he agreed. “Let’s grab lunch then go clean out the baby store.”

I blew out a giggle but nodded as more tears streamed down my cheeks.

“Are you okay?” he asked, sitting back down next to me and brushing my hair away from my face. “Did you want a girl?”

“Oh, I don’t care about that,” I assured him, sniffing softly. “I just never could have believed I’d be this happy.”
