My mom smiled and sat down on the couch as we followed. The bags under her eyes gave away the lack of sleep in her life, and made me hopeful she wouldn’t be staying long.

“So, how are your cases going?” she requested.

“Great.”

“Camilla, what’s wrong? You act like you don’t want to see me?”

“You haven’t visited me in years. You can’t show up and expect me to be giggly and happy to see you. You abandoned me as a teenager after dad died. Who does that?”

She started sobbing. And Sebastian left the room.

“Honey, I’m so sorry. I was in so much pain. I lost the love of my life. I was going to spend the rest of my life with him. I lost him so suddenly. He was so young. I couldn’t bear to be in that house without him and relive those memories that are embedded. I couldn’t do it.”

She still left me, and nothing would change that.

“Why didn’t you take me with you?” I asked.

“Honey, looking at your face every day was the biggest reminder of him. You are the spitting image of your father. Strong and passionate about things like him. I needed to get away from everything that reminded me of him. It was the only way I was going to be able to be semi-happy again.”

“Get out. You should have embraced the memories. Instead you pushed them all away.”

“Excuse me?” she responded.

“I want you to leave. You don’t deserve to be around me. You abandoned me, and I will never forgive you for that. You abandoned me when I needed you the most. Do you ever think of anyone but yourself? I lost my father and you left. I want you to get out of my house and please don’t ever come back.”

I tried to bite my tongue but I couldn’t any longer. I can’t forget what happened or what she put me through. I followed her out and slammed the door.

“What happened?” Sebastian came rushing in, as I fell to the ground.

“She tried to walk in here like everything was fine. It was not. She abandoned me, and she expects me to act like it didn’t happen. Well, it did, and I can’t acquit her. She should have been there for me.”

“Maybe, you should try to accept the fact she is trying to at least have a relationship with you.” He said, dead staring me in the eyes. “I don’t want you to have to live with regret.”
