“Don’t jinx us.” Especially since I don’t know much about him, including his last name or where he lives. Or what he does. Or anything other than his first name, phone number, and a few of the items on his grocery list including bread and frozen pizza.

“Eh. Stop with that jinx nonsense. Fate steps in when we least expect it.”

Yeah, because the frozen food aisle is the last place I’d planned to find fate. But I know the perfect distraction from the actual topic at hand. I place my hand on the back of a wooden rocking chair, slightly rocking it as Granny gasps. “Gracie Adams. Why would you do that?”

“So, jinxes are nonsense, but you believe I can’t rock a chair without someone sitting in it because it’s bad luck.”

“Don’t question fate. It doesn’t take kindly to mockery.”

“Got it.” I move past the chair and continue on.

“Have you decided if you’re going?”

I don’t even have to ask to what because I know. “Haven’t decided yet.”

“You’ll know when you know.”

“Thanks.” For what, I’m not sure. Sometimes I feel like Granny talks in more riddles than fate does. But as I look over at the woman I admire more than any other, I take out my phone and send the message I’ve been thinking about since the moment he was out of my sight.
