“Purple. Now what’s yours?”

“Red.” The return of that damn sly grin tells me there is indeed an underlying meaning in his response. And I’m almost certain his favorite color matches my hair as well as my cheeks at the moment.

“Then that one for sure.” I tap my nail against the ceramic of the red cup in his hand.

With a triumphant grin, he sets down the yellow and grabs another red one that matches. “I’ll take the set.” He motions to the lady behind the table and passes her some cash before we step to the next booth.

“So, other than your favorite color, what else will you tell me about yourself?”

“There’s not much to tell.” My eyes search the items before us as I try to focus on the content instead of the guy asking me questions. Impossible and a total fail.

“What do you do for work?”

“I’m a teacher over at the junior high.” And thanks to Mom’s game of twenty questions, I know he’s a software developer.

We fall into an easy conversation until we get to a question I don’t want to answer. “So, did we need to plan for a date to the doomed nuptials?”

“Still thinking,” I say, walking down a few steps as my fingers trail over the hard plastic tabletop.

“Just let me know when you decide. I’m game either way.”

My eyes land on the soft fabric of blankets in front of me. And when I see the red sheets, my first thought is Tucker’s favorite color, not that Dax hated red. Grabbing the sheets, I pass the seller some cash and look to Tucker. “I want to go. Are you sure you’re up for a fake date?”

The wordfakeis hard to get out without cringing, but that’s what I need to keep in mind. At least for now. I need to go to that wedding, give Dax some red sheets, and get the full-circle closure of showing them that they didn’t break me. They’d done me a favor, because I shouldn’t have to sacrifice things I love just because Dax didn’t like them.

Strangely, Tucker makes me more concerned for my heart than Dax ever did. I have a feeling he holds the power to hurt me worse than Dax ever could, because the thought of him straying from our nonexistent relationship stings more than finding Dax and Holly tangled inmydamn sheets.
