“We met in third grade.”

“Please, even back then you had a commanding, yet nurturing, way about yourself. You’re the one who helped me open my first bank account and it was you who taught me compound interest in fifth grade. However, if you recall, Wallis was in our third-grade class as well. And while you helped me to understand fiscal responsibility at a young age, it was his bad boy persona that won my heart. Eventually, putting a baby in me.”

“We were eight years old when I came to Wayward,” Lucas said. “Wait, didn’t he get sent to the principal’s office for sliding on the floor to peek up Mrs. Haymeyer’s dress?”

She grinned nostalgically. “God, I love that reprobate.”

“You must if you’re willing to stay home with his offspring, missing all of the riveting work to be done in the name of public service.”

“Speaking of things that have grown old and tiresome, how’s Penelope?”

“Why does everyone assume I know anything about what’s going on with Penelope?”

“Aren’t you a couple?”

“Have you ever heard me refer to us as a couple?”

“No, but she has,” Cindy said, fidgeting in the chair and wincing.

“What is she saying?”

“Well, for starters, she’s been asking around for a professional photographer to capture the moment you propose.”

He rubbed his eyebrows. This was not good. Not good at all. He had no intention of proposing.

“She’s also asked for quotes on a five-tier wedding cake covered in butterflies made from spun sugar. And, she’s made an appointment with a fertility clinic to make sure her eggs are still viable.”

A pounding began in the front of his head.

Oh wait, that was someone knocking on his door.

“Come in.”

Lilith shoved the door open with an atypical look of disdain. “Sir, Mr. Mayor, sir, there’s a Penelope Walker here to see you.”

Lucas blinked slowly as Cindy grinned as if saying, “perfect timing.”

Lilith’s lording over his schedule was getting old. “Yes, I know Miss Walker. She comes to my office at least once a week.”

Lilith’s right eyebrow rose. “Miss Walker insists on seeing you right away. I wasn’t sure if you had time for her, sir.” She looked over her shoulder at what must have been the offensive person. “I told her that you and City Manager Wahim were in a meeting and that it was getting late.”

“Lilith, as always, please let her in.”

Cindy wrenched herself out of the chair and Lucas instinctively glanced at the seat cushion.

Unfortunately, Cindy caught him in the act, again. “For the millionth time, I’ll tell you when my water is about to break.”

He held his hands up, palms forward. “Hey, the chair is considered a historic relic. And although you’re an amazing woman who’s baking a baby all up in there, a truly miraculous and mystical event, I’m not sure your water breaking is something that can be foretold.”

Before Cindy took a step, Penelope barreled through the door, eyeing his assistant with a huff. “This is ridiculous. He knows who I am,Lilith, I’m hisgirlfriend.”

Lilith closed the door, returning a fair amount of stink eye to Penelope’s back.

Seeing Cindy, Penelope’s expression morphed into a wide smile and with a saccharine voice, exclaimed, “Well, look at you! Aren’t you just the cutest pregnant woman ever?”

“I’m not cute Penelope, I’m the size of a deck barge with three times the gas,” Cindy replied, monotone.

“Oh, now don’t be silly. There’s nothing as beautiful as a pregnant woman. Is there, Lucas?”
