“Not sure, but based on what you told me, I’m assuming they’re here to somehow help Birdie.”

“Okay, when these women get back safe and sound to Wayward, we’re having them tested for cognitive decline.”

Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. “And psychosis.”

“With delusions of fucking grandeur. Jesus, this whole thing is completely out of control. Don’t think I didn’t notice that you’re out and about playing super avenger, when I told you to get in and get out.”

“I can’t spend each day sitting in a hotel room worrying about Birdie. I’m not leaving without her.”

Grant’s voice turned to a more serious tone. “It’s time to call the Boston PD,Mr. Mayor. You get that, right?”

“Bird and Flynn say they’re on the take.” Lucas fidgeted, aware that this was getting out of control. “Ask Tati if there’s anyone at the Bureau she trusts. Someone in the white-collar crime division, maybe. Just do what you need to do to keep your police chief of a nose clean while getting here as soon as possible.” He hesitated and then blurted, “We’re kind of under a time crunch.”

“Seriously? How so? You gotta fundraiser to attend? A ribbon cutting?”

“It’s Mia’s birthday, smart-ass. Her fifteenth birthday. I might have promised to bring her mom back in time for it. Or at least do everything I can to try. I can’t let her down.”

The line grew quiet.

“Jesus, brother. You know how to hit a guy in the soft spot. Mia’s a great kid,” Grant exhaled.

“She remind you of her?” Lucas asked, knowing the answer.

“Rach?” Another exhale. “Yeah.”

Lucas patiently waited for the expected result. Grant caving.

“Fuck, let me run Tati through the nearest Chick fil-A and we’ll be on our way. If I don’t lose my job over this, it’s going to be a miracle.”
