Seeing the stricken look on Birdie’s face confirmed his suspicions.

Willa Mae handed what looked to Lucas to be a typical spiral notebook, with glitter and sparkles on the cover and in the middle three hearts, and if his memory was accurate, pictures of Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Lyndsey Lohan.

“Where did you find it?” Birdie asked breathlessly, holding it in her hand as if priceless while at the same time cursed.

Pinkie explained, “Mia brought it to us and asked for our help in restoring her mother’s reputation in a town that was blind and culpable in destroying it.”

“Maisie’s diary,” she said softly, reverently. She looked up at the woman and said, “I don’t know what she wrote, but she’s not who you think she is.”

Erma popped up and said, “No, she’s much worse.”

Birdie shook her head sadly and then said something that was the last thing Lucas had expected. “Maybe at one time, but not…later. Not after…” She stopped as if unable to continue, her eyes welling with tears.

Lucas rubbed her back, hoping to give her the strength she needed to continue.

“Let me start at the beginning.” Which was the cue for Pinkie to take a seat and to get comfortable. Lucas sat on the edge of the bed, pulling her next to him.

Birdie took a deep breath, clutching the diary to her.

“After leaving Wayward, Maisie couldn’t get a job but managed to find herself a boyfriend. His name was Creed.”
