“I did.”

She looked to the side as if searching for the right words. “I wasn’t a very nice person back in the day, but I’d like to think I am now.”

Mia wasn’t sure what to say to that but knew she didn’t want to cast judgment. You know, based on what she’d learned in church and all.

“Based on what I read, I hope so, too.” There, that was about as forgiving as she was going to get.

“Before your mom left town, this last time, I apologized to her. I think we might have become friends if she hadn’t left so soon.”

“Yeah.” That’s all Mia could think to say when she remembered the awful things she had said to her mom. And how she had left Wayward because of her. Honestly, when she took a moment to self-reflect, she realized she wasn’t any better than Mary-Lou. She wasn’t better than anybody. People made mistakes. Her, Mary-Lou, Fenton Fester, her mom. Hell, the entire town of Wayward. They were all guilty. All they could do was try to be better. That’s all anyone could do.

Mary-Lou added, “Well, if there’s anything you need, please let me know. Maybe, while your mom is gone and Lucas is away, we could see a movie some time. Or go out to dinner?”

“Are you saying that to make up for the things you did to my mom?”

“Maybe,” Mary-Lou admitted. “But I’ve also heard a lot of nice things about you from my mother. I just thought if you had some free time during the summer, maybe it would be nice to spend some together. You know, a girls’ night out or lunch.”

Oliver was now standing beside her, taking in their conversation. Aware of what was in Maisie’s diary as it pertained to Mary-Lou and equally shocked at the polite conversation.

“Sure,” Mia replied, thinking if she hoped for forgiveness from her mom, maybe she should start by giving it to those who had wronged her. “I’ll let you know a good time.”
