She rolls her eyes at me. “Why do you need to go to the library on a Friday evening?”

“I need to find a book.”

“What book?”

As we speak, Koby’s head snaps back and forth between the two of us.

“Concerning Conflagration and Combustionby Alvord Ashbourne,” I reply. “I need to improve my fire wings spell.”

“Your fire wings spell is already great,” Eliya says. “Besides, don’t you have a copy in your manor? What about the original one old Alvord wrote?”

I shake my head. “The original manuscript was taken to the Vault centuries ago for preservation. That’s why I need to go to the library and find a copy before our Mage Trials.”

“You won’t need a fire spell on the Trial of Heart.”

“I’ll definitely need it for the Trial of Magic.”

“The Trial of Magic isn’t until Friday.”

“I need to study it this weekend. I’ll be too tired in between the trials next week.”

Since the three of us are stopped in the center of the atrium, many adepts flash us annoyed looks as they wind around us. Eliya pays them no attention and heaves out a sigh at me.

“Can’t you go some other time? The library will still be here in the morning. Go and get your book tomorrow.”

“And the bakery will also still be there in the morning.”

“But it won’t be our final day at the Arcanium in the morning, will it?”

I press my lips together, unable to argue with that.

“Lorea! Blake!” Eliya calls over to more adepts in our year. “We’re heading to Flour Power now. Do you want to join us?”

Lorea is as tall as me, with dark skin and ebony hair bluntly cut to her shoulders. Blake is almost half her height, and he has short strawberry-blond hair and nearly as many freckles as Kaely.

“Sure,” Blake says. Lorea nods. Both of them start over to us.

“Great,” Eliya replies. “Now help me convince Reyna not to go to the library and to come with us instead.”

“Why do you need to go to the library?” Lorea asks, peering at me.

“To study?” My response comes out sharper than I intended.

“You seem to do a lot of that these days,” she says.

Eliya snorts. “Too much.”

I turn to Koby for support. He only shrugs.

“Maybe you should take a break,” Blake suggests, unhelpfully.

“Fine, fine,” I say, throwing my hands up in surrender. “Let’s go to the bakery first, and then I’ll go to the library later.”

Eliya purses her lips, probably deciding whether to tell me to get the book tomorrow, but she leaves it at that.

“All right then!” she says. With that, she bounds out of the Arcanium, and we all trail after her.

When we reach the street beyond the Arcanium’s archway, we each mutterlaxusand teleport ourselves to the bakery.
