“Are you honestly willing to put in the work to win her over?” Max asks Romeo.

Immediately, my ears perk up, knowing they’re talking about me.

“You trying to tell me that my natural personality won’t do it for me?”

They chuckle, and Max nudges Romeo again. They stop, looking into the darkness. It has me holding my breath, not sure what they sense out there. They’re still for a few moments before they keep walking.

“Yeah, she’s it for me. I’m not going to allow her to slip through my fingers.”

Max nods in understanding, and they stop just before the stairs at the porch. Silently, I take a step back, trying to hide in the darkness better.

Romeo’s fingers drum on the wood before he speaks. “I’m going to get us out of here. We all deserve better. Gia belongs on a throne, and I’m going to put her there.”

Hearing him say these things has a smile growing on my face. Romeo is rough along the edges, but he keeps surprising me with his kindness. Another memory wants to invade, but it stays just past the darkness, refusing to surface, like every other time I think I might remember something.
