She turns around, pushing her duffle bag of weapons at me. “I want to make this perfectly clear. I don’t trust you.”

“Yes, you do.” I smirk.

“I hate you.”

“Trust me—I don’t like you either,” I lie. It slips easily from my tongue, and I should believe it. Luna and I are so alike that when mixed, we combust. It can’t be good for anyone. But one look at her ass and I forget every reason why I’m doing this other than for my own selfishness.

Who knows? Maybe we can learn to trust one another like the good old days.

Chapter 9

Fin

IwatchimpatientlyasLuna gathers all of her shit, and she purposely takes her time. I keep looking out the window, checking the area for danger. That damn cat is back, sitting at our doorway, its tail slithering against the cement.

A heavy bag lands on my foot, hard, and I fight off a grunt when I take a step back. I look down at her bags.Had she planned on living here?

“How long were you planning on staying?”

She shrugs. “I don’t like to leave without my guns.”

“All of these are guns?” My hand swipes down my face. “Did you pack any clothes?”

“There are a few changes of clothes.”

“You haven’t changed.” I shake my head, picking up the three duffle bags that weigh a million pounds. “I thought girls liked bags with wheels and all that.”

“We both know I’m not like most girls.” She shoulders her way past me, her damn scent wrapping its way around me. She has me following her like a grumbling lost puppy. Shit like this doesn’t normally fly around me.

I drop a bag, and my hand grabs hold of her wrist, and she tries to shake me off. “Let me give the all-clear.” She huffs like I’m putting her out. I take my place back in front, where I can watch for trouble.

She points to her car, and I do my walkaround. I take my time, enjoying the way her foot taps with impatience. My hand goes to touch her car’s handle, when I step back, my back prickling, and I know something is wrong. It’s that gut feeling I get that has never led me wrong. I take a few more steps back, and Luna follows. Her eyes alight, looking to argue with me.

I turn her around by her shoulders. “We’re taking my car.” One hand pushes her farther away from the car as I snatch up the duffle bags.

Her feet drag on the ground. “No, I’ll take mine.” She crosses her arms over her chest.

I toss her bags ahead of us, and her feet move to get them, before she stops herself. My legs bend as I ready to throw her over my shoulder, when her car explodes. I instinctively cover her body with mine as the sound of the explosion rings in my ears.

“Who did you lead to me, O’Conner?” She huffs, attempting to push me off, but her effort is useless against my large frame.

“This is all you, Luna.”

“I was fine before you interrupted me.”

“Define fine.” My eyes scour the area, making sure no one is about to make her a target. If she were anyone else, I would have already let her up. There’s no way in hell I’m allowing anyone to take a shot at her while I’m on watch. She’s the one person who I would sacrifice my life for.

“No one shot at me until you showed your ugly face.” Her pianist hands try to shove me off once again.

I stare down at her, cocking an eyebrow. “We both know I’m not ugly. But if you need to tell yourself that, I’m good with it.” Her tiny hands push against my muscular chest harder. “All right, fighter, I’ll let you up.” I move off of her and extend my hand to help her up. She takes one look at it, shakes her head, and stands on her own.

Stubborn. On any other woman, I would have found it annoying.

“Unbelievable. We have bags of weapons, and you can’t even get one bullet fired off.” She pivots and points at me. “Furthermore, don’t call me annoying nicknames. I’m a fucking woman who knows how to deal with shit herself. I have a name, so use it.”

I try to keep my chuckle under my breath. That’s a lot of anger for being called a fighter. From now on, I will try to come up with more names for her. Soon enough, the endearments will thaw whatever ice chip is on her shoulder.

“Come on, this way.” I swing one of the bags over my shoulder, but she walks ahead of me like she knows where she’s going. I’m not about to correct her. The way her hips swing in those heels has me mesmerized. She’s one fucking gorgeous woman.
