The room is silent, and I hear feet shuffling before I see have another opponent. He’s a young guy, ambitious.

We dance around each other; his moves are fast but not skilled. When he makes his first mistake, I throat-punch him before tossing him to the ground. He doesn’t have time to recover before I quickly end his life.

“I’m just getting started, boys.”

Three more men try to take my place before the room stays silent.

“I will not have traitors among us. Either you stand with me, or you are against the family. If you disagree with me leading, I suggest you exit now.” I wait to see who will be taken out.

No one moves.

“Boss, Boss, Boss” is chanted, as the men accept me as their leader.

Mydayshaveconsistedof meetings, learning of everything my uncle had been working on. I have my best “ears” on any news about Luna.

I’ve immersed myself in my work. My uncle’s top man, Aiden, which I guess now makes him mine, places a news article in front of me on my uncle’s desk.

Alleged Mafia Boss Dies.

I sit back in my chair, seeing a picture of Nicoli Rossi. I wasn’t expecting that. He was bleeding a lot, but the thought of him not surviving never entered my mind. I read the article, and the line that reads, the Rossi family has been hit once again, has my breath catching. Not until the very end of the article does it mention Luna is in a coma. It reads like an afterthought.

My heart hurts for the Rossis. Losing Nicoli will be devastating to them all.

My hand goes to pick up the phone to call Luna’s brother, the new Rossi boss.

What the hell am I going to say?

In all of their minds, I tried to kill Luna. There’s no love between our families.

“Leave,” I command Aiden.

All I should be thinking about is how weak the Italians must be. Instead, I’m pulling up the hospital’s blueprints in our archive, trying to figure out how to see her. I need to see Luna’s condition for my own eyes. I sit staring at the details, knowing there’s an easier way.

Pushing aside my pride, I pick up my phone.

“Luca Rossi,” I greet as soon as he answers.

“Fin.” The voice of Luna’s brother has my stomach sinking.

“How is she?” I ask before I change my mind.

“You don’t get the privilege of that knowledge. The only reason you are living is because you sacrificed your uncle for my father. Even if, in the end, it did no good. Don’t come to the funeral. If you do, I will see it as an act of war.”

“I always respected Nicoli. Who’s keeping Luna safe while you’re at the funeral?”

“That is no longer your concern. Erase my sister from your mind. We haven’t forgotten you pulled your gun on her first. You’re lucky I’m allowing you to breathe. If it were up to the Mancinis, you would be a dead man already.”

My teeth grind at the thought of Max near Luna. “Is this you giving me a heads-up?”

“No. This is me telling you to pray that Luna makes it out of the coma,” he cautions in a devilish tone. “Your wedding is the reason I’ve lost my father, O’Conner. Do not push me.” He hangs up the phone, cutting me off.

One of my men walks in like they own the place. I never get a moment to myself. “We should be planning a strike against the Italians before they hit us” is suggested. “They’re scrambling, and it’s a perfect time to show them how strong we are.”

I hate what I’m hearing.

“Our plan B was to strike after Luna was pregnant with an heir. But since the original plan is already in place, all you need to do is the give the word to execute it,” Adrian informs me.

Plan B. They already had a plan in position if I or the Russians failed.
