“I won’t give up,” Fin proclaims, confusing me.

Why the hell is he here?

“And I won’t care if I kill you,” my brother replies.

Fin’s eyes are hard, but when he glances down at me, they soften. Maybe he feels guilty for wanting me dead first. I want to ask why he’s still being allowed to live but can’t find the energy. Fin lost my trust, making him invisible to me.

I wish I was invisible to everyone.

Fin stalks out of the room, and my brother takes a seat on the chair beside me.

My eyes glance down at the dead body and back to my brother. He doesn’t even acknowledge that it’s there.

“We didn’t know if you would wake up. So much has changed in a short period of time. I could have helped you, Luna, if I had known. You don’t have to carry everything on your shoulders alone. We are family. We need to trust each other and accept help once in a while.”

I don’t know where this is going. My head hurts, and I’m so confused. I try to sit up, but he places his hand on my shoulder, keeping me in place.

“Why is Fin still alive?” My throat is dry, and the words scratch on their way out.

“He’s been helping us with the Bratva.”

“He tried to kill me.”

Luca places his hand over mine. “It’s his story to tell you. I don’t doubt your capabilities. Once you’re feeling better, if you want him dead, I will give you my support.”

I close my eyes. Everything is a mess. “Do we have enough men for the war we’re in?”

“The Irish have been helping us. We’re only fighting one front right now.”

If I kill Fin, that will be another war. The fighting never stops.

“Give me the word, Luna, and I will ensure the Irish remember who they disrespected for generations.”

“You better not be talking business, when Luna’s strapped to all those machines,” my mother scolds as she walks in. She steps over the dead body nonchalantly. The only indication that something is off is that her nose wiggles like she doesn’t like the smell of something, but keeps on talking. “All you need to do is focus on getting better.” She squeezes my hand. “You finally have some color back. The doctor said you can leave in the next few days if you keep progressing the way you have been.”

“Did I miss the funeral?”

The room is silent, and my mother hangs her head. “I’m sorry, dear. It had to be done.” Her eyes mist, and a tear slides down her cheek.

I knew this, but hearing the words still stings. The doctor comes in and clears this throat. “This mess needs to be cleaned up. I don’t need a big red stain in here.” He shakes his head and starts looking at the machines.

Luca goes on his phone then looks back at the doctor. “It will be cleaned up as good as new by the time you need to come back in here. I promise.”

“Hello, Luna,” he greets me. “Nice to see you awake. You’ve been a popular patient. Can’t say we have had any dull moments with your stay.” The doctor’s eyes glances at the body once again.

Chapter 30

Luna

“Shouldyoubeoutof bed?” I look up to see my brother. With the death of our father, I haven’t had much time to see him, even though I’ve been forced to stay in the family home.

I give him a look. “I’m cleaning my gun while sitting.”

“It’s more that look you’re giving your gun that scares me.” He chuckles.

I keep cleaning. I’ve repeated the same action over a hundred times. It helps me think.

“What’s on your mind?” He sighs, crossing his arms. It’s the same look our father used to give us when he knew he would have to work to get what we needed to say out.
