He tilts his body toward me, our lips only a few inches apart. “You have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about,” he growls.

“Then tell me,” I whisper. There is a light fluttering in my belly. His angry voice should have no effect on me. After all these years, my body still seems to have the same reaction to him. I hate it. I can feel my lips tilt down, disgusted with myself.

He sits back, watching me intently, and takes another sip of his water. He’s always been guarded. Unlike me, he easily masks his emotions. I wish I had an easier time doing that when he’s near.

“How is it you’re not married off yet?” He changes the subject. I try to hold the groan in my throat down. What is it with men and thinking a woman needs to be married?

“I’ll take that vodka,” I call to the bartender. “Everyone knows I’m not the marrying type. I don’t need a man to protect me. They get in the way, and I’ll end up having to protect them.”

“You need to surround yourself with better male role models, like me, then.” He smiles, showing his teeth. It reminds me of a wolf flashing his fangs to his prey.

“Why the sudden interest in me?” I ask sweetly, batting my eyelashes and hoping maybe he’ll let his guard down.

“It’s what your father is paying me for. Consider me your new bodyguard.”

I spit my drink across the counter and choke on what’s left in my mouth. My eyes water from my coughing fit, while Fin hasn’t moved. Not even to ask if I’m okay.

“You’re full of shit.” My voice is hoarse, and I wish it had more venom to it. His eye twitches, and I can’t get a read on if he’s being serious or not.

“Call them, ask.” He’s so sure of himself it makes me uneasy. I’m tired of family drama. The way he keeps offering me his phone, he must be telling the truth.

I lift a shoulder, downing the vodka. “I’ll take another one, please.”

If Fin’s here to babysit me, then I’ll give him a reason to babysit. He’ll be gone by morning. I know him. He can’t stand taking care of others. I know it’s why he works alone. He’s known as a lone wolf. It will be another ten years before I see him again, because Fin is good at one thing. Taking care of himself. I used to think I was the exception to the rule, but that was my teenage heart’s wishful thinking. I’ve never forgiven him. And he doesn’t seem sorry.

Chapter 5

Fin

Lunaistestingmypatience. Irritation bites into my thick skin as I realize she has no idea about the deal her brother and I struck. I helped him out of a bind, and he promised me Luna. She’s now to be my wife.

I don’t do anything half-assed. When my uncle asked for me to get closer to her, this idea popped into my mind. There’s no better way to get close to your enemy than by making her fall in love with you. I can see that if I were to tell her we’re getting married, I’d ruin any chance of her trusting me. Since it looks like her brother hasn’t told her of our arranged marriage, I’m going to go with plan B until I can get close enough to her. The bodyguard lie slips easily from me.

I don’t say a word as I stand to go to the bathroom.

“Already defeated and leaving.” A sweet honey-like laugh bubbles out of her throat. The same throat my cock would love to get acquainted with. She’s grown up nice. She outgrew her awkward years and has turned into a stunning woman who’s not afraid to use her features to get what she wants.

I look over my shoulder to give her a wink. “Don’t worry, babe. I’m not leaving. I’m here for the long haul.” Slipping into the men’s room, I call her brother.

“Fin, to what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Why the hell does Luna not know she is engaged to be my wife?” I hiss, my teeth clenching at the back of my jaw. I saved his life; now, in return, Luna is to marry me.

“I told you she wasn’t the marrying kind, and your words were ‘let me deal with it.’ This is me letting you deal with it. You can tell her.”

My hand swipes through my short brown hair. “Slight change of plans.”

“Already trying to return her?” he jabs.

My temples pound with anger. Luna is mine. I’ll have it no other way. My breathing becomes heavy, and I have to push it all down to not show any emotion.

“Not a chance. For now, I’m her bodyguard. I think it will be best for everyone if she warms up to me first before we spring the joyous news on her.”

“I’ll let you tell my mother she needs to stop planning the wedding.”

“I didn’t fucking say that. Let her keep planning. The less time Luna has to stew about the idea of marriage, the better for everyone. She might blame me, but she’ll blame you and your family for selling her.”

“Like you said, that is going to be a ‘you’ problem. I don’t care how you go about it.”
