My legs shake, and when Demetri walks off and is no longer in my view, I fall to the ground. I can’t go on like this. I see Luca hand my mother off to my sisters’ husbands, and he looks up at me. Disappointment controls his body language. My father was the only one who realized I tried to be a good person but that bad things would just happen to me.

Luca walks up the hill toward me. I don’t have the energy to rise to my feet. “Go home and get some rest,” he snaps.

I study my brother then. He has dark circles under his eyes. “Where are you going?”

“Someone needs to keep the family business going. With Dad gone, everyone is testing me. But he and I knew this would happen. It’s nothing I can’t handle.”

“How bad is it?”

His hand threads through his hair. “Bad enough. I’d feel better if you had someone taking care of you, in case something happens to me.” He pauses. “I know you can handle the truth. But not everyone can. Keep that to yourself.”

“I’m sorry, Luca.”

My brother nods and continues on his way. I tell myself to stand up, but my feet won’t listen to me. I need to save my family. It’s obvious Luca doesn’t think even he can.

I blow out an uneven breath, trying to will my feet to move once again. I just don’t have it in me. Tilting my head back, I close my eyes fighting against a new batch of tears. When I open my eyes, my vision is blurry but I see a man with a scowl watching me. My feet move on their own accord as I stand and turn. In seconds, I blink away the moisture collected, no one is there but an empty parking lot.

Demetri

Isitinfrontof my fireplace with a short glass of vodka and ice. I wait for more news about Katrina, unable to give her up. I want to see her suffer. The thought kicks my lips up in an unhappy smile.

The Italians are weak. I framed Nicoli’s obituary on my wall, to remind myself all great empires fall.

Lifting my phone to my ear, I call my sweet Katrina. “How does it feel to know you killed your father?” I can hear her gasp. I wish I asked her this when I could see her face. “Who did you cheat on me with?”

“I would rather die than tell you.” I can practically feel the way she spits her answer toward me.

“I could make that happen, my beautiful girl.” I move my glass in a circle before taking a sip. “Instead, I will kill your sister, Luna. She’s the one who hid you from me.”

Ignoring her screaming voice, I hang up the phone, typing out the kill order.

It doesn’t take long for my phone to beep. I already have men watching the entire Rossi family. I eagerly pick it up. Instead of victory, I get a picture of my man, dead, alongside Luca Rossi’s face. My hand squeezes the phone until I hear the case crack.

My legs propel me up as I pace in front of my fire. I call Katrina back, wanting to break her. “I will not stop until you give me what I want.”

I can hear her breathing into the phone, but she says nothing. I give her a moment to gather her thoughts.

She finally speaks. “For a man who is so intelligent, you’re a moron.”

I growl at her insult. My lip snarls, baring my teeth, not that she can see. Each fingertip wants to feel her neck under its pad. But I settle for my drink instead. I down the remainder of the glass.

“You’re the fucking father, Demetri!” she suddenly yells into the phone, and my glass slips out of my hand and shatters at my feet.

“Excuse me?” My Russian accent is thick, my emotions not allowing me to muffle it.

“Now, you better listen to me. Youwillstop fighting with my family.”

“Fat chance, princess.”

“No, you don’t understand. I have losteverything. My family tolerates me, at best.Youkilling my father is blamed onme. I can kill your heir in a matter of seconds.”

Now it’s my turn to gather my thoughts.

“When I find you, I’m locking you in my cage.”

“You don’t get to call the shots anymore. I’m running this show now. You’ll do as I say, understand me?” The way she exudes her power against me has my dick stirring back to life. Motherfucking hell.

“As long as you are not in my arms, I will continue to kill your family one by one,” I seethe.
