“We both know that wouldn’t stop him from finding you. If this is any help, you are good for him. He’s different around you.”

Vadim steps out and opens the back door for me. “You’re a strong woman. It’s why he likes you. You have two choices how I see it. Show him how strong you really are, or hide behind your fears.”

“Those are horrible choices. There must be another choice you can think of.” I give him a genuine smile. I like Vadim, he’s easy to talk to.

His hand reaches for the door handle, but I’m not ready yet. “What do you think of the name Capree for a girl?” I ask, stalling. My hand rests on my large stomach and my other hand rubs at my back. I’m not sure if I’m having a boy or girl, but only girl names have come to me so far.

“Whatever name you and Demetri choose will be beautiful.”

He opens the door to the house, and I see small toys are scattered on the floor. My heart does a double pound.

“You got this, Katrina,” he encourages from behind.

“Hello?” a woman calls, then the owner of the voice steps out from the hallway in a pink towel, her hair wet and dripping down her shoulders.

She pauses like a deer in headlights. I don’t know what to say. Anger ignites in me, knowing that Demetri was banging some random just hours before we said our wedding vows.

No, she looks too comfortable to be random.

I feel like I’ve been struck down once again. Another lightning bolt to my heart.

“Who are you?” I ask, my eyes darting from her to the toys, and I wish I knew why those things were in his house. Does Demetri have a child? Maybe hecollectsbaby mamas.

She rears back. “This is my home. Who are you?” Her eyes lower to my big belly, and I instinctively place my hands over my baby.

I go to turn, but Vadim stops me, spinning me back around. Silently, I curse him, for not giving me a warning. We talked the entire drive; he had time to give me a heads up. “I am Demetri’s wife,” I announce, squaring my shoulders.

The woman laughs. “Trust me, honey. Demetri doesn’t do commitment. You may have thought you did the whole Vegas-style wedding, but—”

I cut her off. “Demetri would never work that hard to con a woman into thinking she married him, just for a fuck. We both know this,” I lie. From my interactions with him, he goes out of his way to annoy me. Like robbing me before fucking me. “I’m carrying his child, this is now my home, and I have a right to know who you are.” She’s glaring at me, and I hate it, so out of spite, I add, “I will run this household from now on. If you plan to keep your job—”

This time, it’s her stopping me. “Honey.” That name is like nails on a blackboard. It rakes down my spine each time she says it. “I’m like a mother to his daughter, and I live here.” She whips her wet hair behind her as she walks away from me.

My fingers curl into fists.

I want to go home.

“Take off your shoes,” Vadim directs softly, his hand giving my shoulder a light tap. “You can’t expect people to take you seriously when there has been no announcement or big wedding. If you’re going to be married to the leader of the Bratva, you need to act as one yourself, and then those trivial things won’t matter. Eva is a sweet girl when you get to know her. You blindsided her; that’s all.”

Eva.

I hate that name.

Chapter 13: Demetri

Tobehonest,Ihaven’t thought much of this through. I could hardly contain my smile, when I was holding Katrina’s hand while saying our wedding vows. The whole morning, I walked as if I were on clouds, knowing she was “forcing” me to marry her. I had to continue to make her feel like she was putting me out because I was scared she’d change her mind. If she thought I wanted to marry her and her family was safe from me, she would have run again. I refuse to let her slip through my fingers. Katrina Rossi was mine and now everyone will know it.

When I pull up to my home, I wonder how the girls got along together. In hindsight, I should have given both of them a heads-up. My hand pulls down over my face. I still can’t believe she took exactly what I wanted to do right out of my hands.

I walk toward my house and Vadim is leaning up against the front door guarding Katrina. He’s the only man I trust with her right now.

“Take Eva to a hotel, and make sure she gets the works at the spa. Also, have that backup nanny I hire go with her to watch Charlotte for the next day, while I figure this out,” I order.

My driver stares at me. “Yes, sir.”

I walk into my house, and Eva is peeling an apple with a knife. I don’t want to argue. I just want to fuck my new wife. I walk past Eva, and I can feel her death glare staying on my back.

“You can’t avoid this, Demetri,” she calls, but I ignore her and go to my room. She’ll have to leave in the next few minutes to pick Charlotte up from kindergarten.
